What's the hardest quarry you have hunted?..

Recommended Posts

i would go along with a fully mature red stag, i was down in cleethorpes coursing about 5yrs back and we put one out of a dyke , it was a monster weighing well over 1000 with a full set of antlers, i'm no deer expert but i cant see any dog pulling that down  single handed, it ran straight in front of our moter without a care in the world clearing a hedge and a ditch as if it wasnt there, over the years we have hunted that land ive noticed the footings about but that is the only time ive seen it, i was amazed that an animal that size could stay out of sight with not much cover about.

my pal joe was egging me on to slip my dog, mmmm no fecking way  :11:

Ive just had a close shave with a farmer and the law, my young AB (100lb) piled into a heard of young steer and proceeded in catching one , by the time i got through the hedge and up the hill he was bringing it back to me by its ear :11: he ended up locked on his nose and wone that bull good and proper !

Exiting at the time but the £150 compesation to the farmer and old bill nockin on my door wasnt mutch fun

I've had a roe join in on a course, running about four feet to the side of the hare that my dog was running until the roe turned off, the dog didn't know which one to chase :11: and veered of for a second and then decided to stay on the hare. They were about the same speed, but I would say the hare was the faster as the dog had been running the hare for a bit before the roe joined in.

There can be different situations, were all quarry can be hard has hell, has for hares in small fields, i had a bitch ,that destroyed them ,in the small fields , and i mean winter time , this same bitch ,went to the fens , before i had the luck to own her ,or better still be her mate, and i know that when she ran there ,she never missed ,the lads offered silly money for her, but the wanker ,would not sell her ,he was not invited again ,i only got her ,because being the cruel bxstard that he was ,she refused to work for him, people who know and have met me ,will vouch ,that i do not lie, this bitch had 15 hares out off 15 hares ,when i ran her ,not in one day ,but twice she had four out of four, i was really glad when she missed the sixteenth ,but i never saw her miss again. when it came to lamping rabbits it was just homicide, now rosie a bitch ,that i rated very good has a worker ,had three out of three hares on this ground, TWICE, yet compared to mindy, no chance ,i think some times ,it can be the luck of the draw ,or how far you have travelled , to different places ,that shows there are some really special dogs about, i know this is just one quarry , but there are dogs out there ,that can surprise you.

Roe deer that have been run ounce or twice are very quick!!

Is the Roe the fastest wild mammal in britian??????

I was reading the Field in a newsagents a few months ago and it stated in there that the roe deer is the fastest British land mammal. I was a bit suprised because I always assumed that hares were the fastest.

The hardest animal to catch that my dogs have ever run is the Pronghorn. They have never caught one but they have chased a few. The pronghorn just play with the dogs and stay just out of reach, speeding up anytime they need too. The Pronghorn has been successfully coursed in the past. It is illegal to course them now.

Coyotes are pretty easy for a fast dog to catch, but the fight at the end is a little harder on the dog. My dogs have run a wolf once and they caught up to it very quickly. Again not a good test of speed, at least from this one example. This is also illegal so don't tell anyone. For sheer speed and maneuverability the whitetail jackrabbit of Wyoming is the best I have run.

I would never turn a group of dogs loose on an Elk, they are just too damn big, plus they mostly live in the thick forest. That makes it hard for a sighthound.

Wolves kill bull elk, so why shoudn't longdogs, a big strong longdog is at least as powerful as a wolf and substantially faster. I have seen pronghorn run twice, they are simply awsome, tremendously fast and can run all day!

Wolves generally kill sick or hurt bull elk, not healthy ones. Wolves also hunt in packs and the larger a pack the better chance they have of taking a large animal. A bull elk is between 600 and 100 pounds, with racks 5 or 6 feet long. I would not turn my dogs loose on an animal that big and my big males are around 100 pounds.

As far as a longdog being as powerful as a wolf, I doubt it, faster yes. Wolves are very very strong, when wolves were coursed here, the hunters always used large groups of sighthounds and most times the dogs did not kill the wolf. The hunter had to do that.

There are lots of pronghorns where we course jacks, so the dogs do run them from time to time. They have not caught one yet.

Take a look at some of these.

yep, this Rey is right, for "tough to catch" the pronghorn blows deer out of the water.

they hit speeds deer never heard of and can outlast most saluki crosses. The only ones i ever caught were in my youth in fairly deep snow or when they make a mistake at a fence. i could be wrong but i never ever remember one "jumping" a fence, they take them under like a dog. Just my opinion. bob
