The red deer and your elk are, i beleive the same animal....just a continent away... cervus elaphus..but i stand tpo be corrected....your elk are much, much bigger though......would love to bow hunt one

i think roe are faster than the hare,but i would'nt say they compare on the turning ability.

foxes are'nt as fast as either but there not far behind the hare when it comes to turning

I dont know about the Red and the Elk?...all i know is that the Elk are MUCH bigger...but they do resemble Red's...they sound real different when in the Rut as well...Oh, and Elk tastes better, imo... :11:

I know some guys who have shot Elk with bows...one bloke i know shot one from about 12 yards away...it only ran about 40 yards...im putting in for my Non-Tribal Cow Elk tag this season, in AZ...fingers crossed i get it...i wont be using a bow though...probably the .30-06 or the 7mm Win Mag...

I would say Hres are faster than Roe...but maybe they look faster because there little legs have to move more!..lol.

if we are talking native species then here it would be the kangaroo - historically of course . They would kick and drown dogs, run them over fallen over trees(over roots etc that were spikey) a roo male standing up could be over 7 feet high

 

but if any game then i guess a cranky pig would probably be the worst here. depends on the terrain i guess.

 

edit : my avatar is of a grey kangaroo legally shot, im 6 foot 6(200cm tall) so you can see how big this bugger was. Ive seen bigger then this, he was an old boy and had rubbed patches off his back from all the ticks

i would go along with a fully mature red stag, i was down in cleethorpes coursing about 5yrs back and we put one out of a dyke , it was a monster weighing well over 1000 with a full set of antlers, i'm no deer expert but i cant see any dog pulling that down single handed, it ran straight in front of our moter without a care in the world clearing a hedge and a ditch as if it wasnt there, over the years we have hunted that land ive noticed the footings about but that is the only time ive seen it, i was amazed that an animal that size could stay out of sight with not much cover about.

pigs are fast but only cause they always break down hill, on flat ground a well paced dog will easily out run them after a few hundred meters,pigs don't sweat so they over heat after a while. the red and wapiti are similar but not the same waps being about 2 and a half times bigger we have some up the road and when compared to reds they are huge, mind you a full grown sambur stag is even bigger again built like a horse :search:

The winter hare, roe are no problem for a good deer dog, but can put up a good run, but the hare thinks and turns on sixpence and does not get as paniced like roe.....so its gotta be a winter hare in small fields.

Roos would have to be one of the easyst things to catch they are slow and turn like a bus. deer would be the hardest thing ive had my dogs behind

lol...i wouldnt even put a PACK of running dogs on a Bull Elk...but i would put dogs on a Cow...IF it was legal,

Ive just had a close shave with a farmer and the law, my young AB (100lb) piled into a heard of young steer and proceeded in catching one , by the time i got through the hedge and up the hill he was bringing it back to me by its ear :11: he ended up locked on his nose and wone that bull good and proper !

Exiting at the time but the £150 compesation to the farmer and old bill nockin on my door wasnt mutch fun

Yeah Mik,..they call it Bugling (spl?.lol) its the strangest noise i have ever heard, and it sounds preastoric...sends shivers down your spine, thats for sure!...Cow elk make a sound that sounds just like a bird or a small cat!...its like a "Meww..Meww" sound...real strange!
