Kye 77
What would you say is the hardest quarry species to catch with a running dog?...im not on about the hardest to kill when the dog has caught it...what is the hardest animal for a dog to put its mouth on...i would say the hare...what do you guys think? Guest boyo
i must say i totally agree with you, the hare is the most difficult animal to catch.the ultimate test for any running dog. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
i would say a red stag, cos a lurcher will find it very difficult to get a firm grip....but for speed and turning ability, a hare or a daytime CWD takes some catching...those fallow bucks are tough , muscly critters too..i would take with a pinch of salt all those romantic tales you hear about little 23" whip/greys pulling a multiple bag of fallow bucks...they do not give up the fight easily, and my 70lb dog has(had!) trouble holding them....alot of trouble.........obviously, this is all from a historical viewpoint good hunting guys...JD Quote Link to post
brock 11
lurchers pulling a red is something i would love to see,ive watched big sika stags and fallow being pulled, but i would imagine they are nothing compared to a big red,you must need some very powerfull, game dogs.I've heard the odd tale about them being caught, but only by people who are known to stretch the truth.I bet they get the heart rate going a bit, before and after they've been pulled, how do you manage to get them home. I take my hat of to you boys who have been there and done it. Quote Link to post
Guest Leveller
It's gotta be a Red Stag they do not like being caught one little bit and will almost throw themselves off Porlock in a bid for freedom Quote Link to post
Flynn 314
A winter hare past tence, or a lamp shy rabbit Quote Link to post
Kye 77
Its funny you should say Cheetah Socks...i wonder how a REAL good dog/dogs would do on one?...i bet the cheetah would have the edge for the first couple of hundred yards, but dogs would far out pace it...i think buy the time the dogs pulled, it wouldnt have that much fight left?!...be interesting!..lol. Ive never seen a Red being taken...and i agree, them fallow do take some stopping...i often wonder how that ole' dog of mine would have done on a fallow buck... .. Thanks for the replys guys... Ive heard the wolf is supposed to be one hell of a test for the running dogs...and i wonder about the Elk!... ..of course its not legal, so we would never find out, but im sure the pioneers tried it!. The Pronghorn Antelope is supposed to be some runner!...but there not legal either so we wont know about them. I would still go for the hare though... Kye.. PS...Molly, im sure that your Khan could take a hammerhead single handed... Quote Link to post

I would say the fastest animal in the UK is the Hare.. Having said that, the humble little rabbit can be a hard target...i bet the rabbit is the cause of the most injurys in the Running dog world, more than any other animal! Kye.. Quote Link to post
