difference between a coursing whippet and a normal whippet

it was a 20 inch limmit, which i thought was unfair to dogs ,because obviousley dogs are bigger than bitches. at the east anglian they used to run one meeting a year for 21inch dogs, which i ran my 21 inch oakbark bred dog, i could also have a run at the end of the day when all compititions were finished if there were any hares left to run.

if i were to get another whippet i would get a mike brown sooty sam line or one from lyneperry nimrodel lines both best whippets i have seen, good bone, good strike,stamina, real deal. my oakbark was good he had an extra gear, but didnt have that extra determination and strike that the working sooty sam and nimrodel lines have.

I have three whippets. Two from Coursing lines and one is an out and out race dog. My dog is 19" and one of my bitches is 20" so can both still race but my other bitch is 21" so cant race in the nationals (not fast enough anyway)

 

To me 23" is a lurcher not a whippet but each to there own.

 

My two bithces work well on the lamp but I prefer the race bred dog for lamping. His acceleration is night and day off the mark, and he turns quicker and runs faster. People say that race dogs dont have alot of Stamina for a hard days work but I would argure that statement based on my own experiances.

 

My dog was sired by WRCA Evansent to a Parkstone bitch and while he his not quite fast enough to win at champs etc he is a great wee worker.

 

Last year I was out with another memeber of the racing club and we ran a few hares in Stirling. What really impressed me was how quick they were ready to run again. Both race bred dogs but keen as mustard and after a hard run they were ready to run within a few minutes.

 

I like the whippets and enjoy that I can race them in the summer and work them in the winter.

 

They are also great wee pets and great with the kids.

a fella i bought a terrier off in preston had 20+coursing whippets in pens holding 5 or 6 each!no fights no problems.dont know if these were typical of "coursing whippets"but they were definetly heavier boned than most ive seen,apparently he sent quite a few to ireland wich won well.he had an 8 week old dog pup there as payment for stud fees ,and offered it me for £100 would have happily given my left nut for it,unfortunatly the missus would of taken off the remaining one if i took it home!!a few of his dogs were a dark chocolate colour , never before or since seen one like em.yis dave

my 2 half salukis have sooty sam in them through there dam, the determination in these dogs is unreal, they never give in

i know a few lads who race whippets to quite a high level,they wont touch sooty sam lines .yet the working lads love this line,any idea why?

For a Whippet to be 23 inches it's crossed with a Greyhound somewhere down thee lines

My brother has just bought a laguna whippet.

 

Dont work them myself although imust say he looks a very strong pup.

 

Full of spirit too.

 

Can anyone tell me more about this breed .

As some of you may know I have recently bought a whippet of Dave Sleight and I think there is a noticeable difference between him and any kc whippet, no nervousness, he is confident and above all keen to hunt through most types of ground eg open fields or wooded areas and at only a young age he has, I think, got that extra zip if you like. His build is of a much stronger workman like type than I have seen in the kc ones I watched work a few years ago.
