Bootsha 1,306
I have at present a rimfire, a .222 and a .308 on my ticket. I am seriously thinking of getting rid of the .308 and .222 and getting one rifle to replace the two. What sensible suggestions are there as to what calibre i should change to for both fox control and stalking? Along the lines of a .243 / .247, big enough to stalk, and sensible enough for fox control. Whaddya reckon gentlemen? Quote Link to post

toads 5
Hi,I have been thinking about this myself -what about 25-06 I believe that you can get 90/95 grain ballistic tips (fox) and then something like 130/140 grain soft points for your deer. This should cover all six species of deer.By the way have you got any of that frontline type capsules and dog wormer left. pm me if you have cheers Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
Have you considered .270? Quote Link to post
Bootsha 1,306
I had thought of .270, but what experience i have, there is a hell of a bang, heavy recoil, ammo is expensive and dont seem to be that popular??!!. Is there a reason for this ??, dont know, i had thought of a 22.250, perfect for vermin, and yes, will take care of deer if taken in the right spot, but, correct me if i'm wrong here, are not suitable muzzle velocity or whatever it is they measure leagal deer calibres by these days. So i still dont know. Toads ,you have pm. Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Keep what you have ! With a .243 you will not improve what you have . True you will get a longer range harder hitting fox rifle . But louder and with more recoil than your .222. And you get a less meat friendly deer rifle. With less choice of deer bullets. 6.5 x 55 is a better choice than .243 if you rearly want to change ! Edited September 23, 2011 by coldweld Quote Link to post

SNAP SHOT 194
Agree with coldweld above, 6.5x55se is a great round, as is the .243, but just to throw another into the mix 7mm-08 would be one to look at, And for those that say the .243 isn't upto the job, i say it is in the right hands, i've seen plenty shooters with larger calibres fire at deer several times and not complete the task effectively... jamie g 17
25/06 is a good one. 70 grain bullets up to 120 grain bullets. not alot of them about though. thats why i went for a 270 in the end as there cheap as chips. something on a tikka m695 action is very good for the money. trouble is the 25/06 and 270 do use alot of powder if you do a lot of foxing it can work out dear. at the moment you have a good mixture of calibres so i would think long and hard about it Quote Link to post
Bootsha 1,306
Fair comment from all concerned, thankyou, shows my ignorance, never even heard of a 25/06 . How would you rate the .270 Jamie ?? Quote Link to post

How would you rate the .270 Jamie ?? i havent used it yet mate so cant comment really. i went by what my friends who have them told me. there cheap to buy as there not popular. yet in the usa there one of the best calibres going for hunting. there flat shooting. but my mate downloads his and uses it from munty to reds up in scotland Quote Link to post

First observation is KEEP BOTH, and get something else in between as well, but lets assume there is a good reason why two will have to go and be replaced by one. Do you reload? If so pretty much whatever you want! If not get a .243, and quite probably get a .243 anyway!! Quote Link to post

Thanks for your reply, firstly No i dont reload, i often thought about it, but being a lazy gitt, thought it too complicated, although i have seen the benefits of homeload accuracy. Secondly , my issuing force is Dyfed Powys Police, they wouldn't give you the steam of their shit let alone another rifle in between, i'm quite suprised that they havent suggested i do what i asked at the start of the thread. .243 does seem to tick a lot of boxes. Thanks again Quote Link to post

The Seeker 3,048
6.5 x55 gives you 85 up to 160 grain bullets which will cover fox and deer (my choice). The .243 is a faster round but as has been claimed can cause some meat damage on deer. Why don't you consider replacing the .222 with the .243 and keep the .308 that way you have the range of bullet choices all the way through? Quote Link to post
