Ideation 8,216 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 As some of you probably know, my dog f****d himself up last thursday, hitting a piece of barbed wire strung just above the ground, flat out. Luckily it was pretty close to where he had taken off from so wasn't running flat out, but still, he hit it head on and lost his good looks forever, a long with a chunk of his front leg. Anyway, he has had a bucket on for a week now, and has been miserable, getting only lead walks along the roads, and seeing no action. Last couple of days he has been really bad, whining at the door, going out and staring at the ferrets and generally trying to incite me to take him out. So today i decided to give him a wee bit of excitement, took him out for his usual road walk, but slipped a ferret into my pocket and a couple of nets. I decided to take the old poley jill. Anyway, had a good walk a long the roads, and on the way back, the dog froze, pointing into the hedge / banking. I held him back, stopping him from diving in, and kicked the hedge / debris with my foot, sending bunny off through the woods as fast as his little legs could carry him. Took the dog around to the other side of the hedge, let him pick up the line and followed it for a few hundred yards through the woods, to a nice little 6 hole set in the clear. He did well, following the line like a hound, on a trailing lead. Netted up, entered the ferret, and kept a firm hold of the dog, quite for a fair bit and then bump bump bump, the rabbit slams into the net. Make sure it isn't going anywhere and then let the dog jump on it. Dispatch the rabbit, take the other nets off (ferret out), and let him carry the bunny all the way home, one very happy whippet. Did get some funny looks, a couple of waves and at least one middle finger, walking down the road in the daylight, box on my back, and dog trotting next to me, dead bunny dangling from his gob. atb Ideation. He is pretty hardy as whippets go, great feet (touch wood) and a decent enough skin, for the breed, and a tough little bugger. But unfortunately he has too much drive and dedication and not enough awareness of obstacles when on game, he just doesn;t think about or see anything other than the rabbit. If he was a bigger dog, he would be an absolute machine. As it goes, i just hope he makes old bones, and one day in the far far future i might put him over a very sturdy, taller, rough coated bitch, and breed a ferreting dog with his fire, but one that doesn't break so easy. . . haha. She tries to play with the other dog but were under strict instructions for her not to use the leg. Takin her out for a pee and she has to go on a lead, you wouldn't think she had just broke her leg!
