Phantom 631
Now go wash your dirty minds out Hi Guy's, Not been around to much with the year being as sh!tty as it has been so far, nor have I done much in the way of hunting this year. Probably only five or six trips since January. Well I decided to go visit my youngest daughter and my permissions on Wednesday and stay overnight at my ex-wifes place. I popped into BunnyLand (Mrs G's) and spent three hours there, only one bunny appeared and it looked like it was recovering from Myxie (eyes open and scabby, not closed and pussie) I left it alone so that any future offspring of this will have a better chance of immunity to the disease. After an hour I decided to go visit the front garden to see if anything was brave enough to play dodgeball with my pellets. I spent about an hour leant against one of the big trees, but no joy there, had a wander around to the side of the grounds adjoining the cememtery and again saw nothing either there or in the cemetery. Walking quietly back the way I came I saw a nice large, lone Woody flying from the duel carriageway and swooping low towards one of the medium trees next to the house. It landed daintally in the strong south westerley winds. Damn! The second I move it's gonna see me and off it goes or so I thought! My luck however was in due to the strong winds it was perched leaning forward, neck stretched into the wind it's head hidden behind a branch so it couldn't see me. I pushed myself forward to go around a thick bush and pushed myself flat up against the fence raising my baby to my eye. Range was around 25 to 27 yards and not particularly high so barely any hold under needed to compensate for angle, instead my problem was the strong winds. I placed the crosshair next to the place I figured the tip of its beak was and just slightly lower than head height. Off went the pellet; I saw the feathers ruffle and fly almost precicely where I had envisioned the pellet would strike. The spinal column in the neck severed; the bird dropped from the branch like the proverbial lead balloon! SWEET! Soon after that I saw the LO's gardener, he is also the one who maintains the grounds at the cemetery. He came over and asked me if I was knocking over the furry lil b@st@rds? I replied yes and he asked me for my name and contact number as one of his larger clients was to quote him "Plagued with rabbits of epic proportions" I asked where it was and he told me. I used to work delivering flyers' for local businesses a good few years back and I have been into the grounds of this property and I remember there was always bunnies running around up there I also remember there was a very strong populus of Grey Squirrel in that area and I remember seeing two of the tree rats chasing one another around on one of the walls of the main building. The local Golf course also cuts through part of this land. I am expecting a call from the LO in the next couple of days Anyways After leaving Bunnyland (or as it appeared bunnyless land) I went next door to the cemetery for a few hours as the end of daylight drew in. Again only one bunny seen and it was too far for my liking in such strong winds. At that time I'd have had to aim off towards the Humber in the hope of cracking it Just before the wind died down for a little bit the bunny took to its heels and skirted around the cemetery towards bunnyland I followed it through the scope and it came to a stop close to the path, ducking and weaving between the headstones I made my way over to a tall bush knowing that I would be able to knock it over. Getting to the bush I once again raised my baby to my eye and slowly rounded the bush ready to aquire the target. The target was nowhere to be seen, it had slipped through the fence back into Mrs G's land. Typical. It was at that time I heard the Cooing of another Woody. With the wind increasing again there was only one place a bird could be and make that noise. I knew the range, the angle and all I needed to do was compensate for the wind. Extending the legs of the pod to maximum I pulled them down into place using the bush as cover I laid prone and shuffled round until I saw the biggest ruddy woodie I've seen in a hell of a long time long time! What a beauty! Thats probably the biggest Cock Woody I've ever seen I uttered to myself. One mildot hold under to compensate for the angle, 1.5 mildots lead and waited for the wind to get over this strong gust. As the gust died a little, I let the shot go and as the sun was behind me I could see the pellet fly through it's tragectory; as it impacted the top and back of the birds skull I saw fragments of bone blood and feather fly up into the air as the pellet continued skywards. The bird managed to spread its wings halfway open (unlike the first one that didn't get chance), the wind being strong pushed against the wings and it left its perch backwards dropping like a stone head first to the concrete below. If it wasn't dead before it fell; it sure was by the time the body hit the ground! After the death of my usual camera phone earlier this year and the loss (hope it's just misplaced) I didn't have a camera in my kit. So sorry guy's n dolls no pix of the full birds together for comparison I plucked and breasted the birds back at the ex-wifes and today I cooked them, marinaded in Chinese sticky stuff (the stuff they use on ribs etc) and then served on a bed of fragrent Basmati Rice with a drizzle of Ginger and Garlic sauce Tony This is the finished product. 1 Quote Link to post

The Duncan 802
A lovely write up too! Love taking woodies with the air rifle (also usually as a bi-product of hunting for something else), almost as much as with the shotgun. Keep at it and well done Duncan. Quote Link to post
