skycat 6,173
Always use straw: get it from the farm. Make sure its nice and clean and dry: not musty. I sprinkle it with diatomaceous earth to kill any bugs, mites, fleas etc. Straw is warm, dries wet dogs off fast, and is cheap. I change it every fortnight in winter when the dogs are going in wet a lot of the time. Hoover out the corners of the kennels, sprinkle more diatomaceous earth and then add fresh straw. Never have a problem with ticks, fleas or anything. Burn or compost the used straw. The other good thing about straw is that the dog can dig a good nest in it: in the real cold weather I find them half buried sometimes. Only downside is that it sticks to the coats of rough coated dogs a bit, but a quick brush over and it falls off. 1 Quote Link to post
sighthound123 31
I use straw mate, jsut make sure you treat them for fleas and replace it when it gets too chewed up because if you leave it when its been chewed up finely by the dogs they can get small bits in their eyes. But i've had no problems de-flea regular and put new straw in when needed and you'll be fine Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Raff, i tried straw for less than a year, i found it was cheap to buy, but IF the dog got wet in the run the straw was ruined in no time, same with shredded paper imo.............Shavings are terrible and i found the best method has been blankets and duvets, although as with any other bedding it needs checking daily............. P.S I also got fed up with straw blowing everywhere after cleaning...... Quote Link to post
