dogvixen01 34
i am new to airgunning and was looking at the pellet weight chart pinned in this section to try and solve a problem relating to a tin of bisley magnum 177 i have just bought.the tin is marked bisley magnum 4.5mm on the lid but there is no weight of pellet marked on the tin.there is a label on the bottom which says barracuda match 4.52. i then looked at the chart in here to try and see if it would help me and even that is confusing as there is a figure for bisley magnum, barracuda match and bisley 4.51 mm which are all different weights ,i believe that this confusion regarding different names for the same pellet , variations relating to diameter and no weight markings is very misleading..all tins of pellets imho should have an industry standard of labelling which should have the weight of each pellet marked up on them, and their diameter to avoid the confusion. i beleive by law that each individual is responsible to make sure his gun remains legal regarding power limits and looking at that formula ( fps x fps x weight / 450240 ) if you had your own chrono or access to one , which would give you the fps am i right in saying you would also need the exact pellet weight in order for the chrono to work it all out , i would be interested in other peoples opinions on this .atb and thanks. neil82 1,080
find your local hippie shop and buy some druggie scales, youll be surprised at the weight variation even out of the same tin Quote Link to post
Phil8282 8
Pellet weights vary alot from tin to tin, even batch to batch, Barras claim to be 10.5, but I've had them at 10.1 and 11! So get some scales, 7.99 from the bay. Quote Link to post
dogvixen01 34
between tin and chart there appears to be 3 different weights.anyone recomend a good scales and chrono.atb and thanks. Quote Link to post
neil82 1,080
i`ve just got a cheap scale bought from the local extra long rizzla shop and use a combro for quick checking and for more serious chrono testing a chrono f1, weigh out 10 or 20 pellets same weight to try and get consistant readings, if you get your own scales try a string of 20 out of the tin then put a string of weighed pellets through, you may be surprised at the variation Quote Link to post
dogvixen01 34
what make is the combro.is it good enough for testing pellets or would you advise the f1.atb thanks. Quote Link to post
neil82 1,080
try googling `combro mk4`, main problem is short supply so when available they sell out fast, sometimes come up on evilbay and fetch more money than a new one Quote Link to post

dogvixen01 34
followed advice of weighing pellets results as follows; AA DIABLO FIELD 4.51 mm varied from 8.2 - 8.9 grains.average 8.78 ( tin shows 8.44 grains / .547 grams ) BISLEY MAGNUM ( also called BARRACUDA MATCH 4.52 mm ) varied from 10.1 - 10.6 .average 10.39 my general conclusion of these figures are bisley magnums are more consistently made regarding pellet weight variation. these figures are obviously only based on one tin of each.the ultimate aim of airgun pellets is accuracy.i will be trying out both pellets for their accuracy factors.this is first time i have tried weighing out pellets and was very surprised that the aa field world class pellets were so variable regarding their weights, regarding their varying pellet weights would this have a big difference on fps and ft /lb and trajectories.if putting information onto a brc or into chrono i imagine that you would have to put in the average weights . if a gun was confiscated by the police for any reason what pellet would they use for testing.would it be one you are using or any pellet.thanks for reading.any replies would be very grateful.atb . Phil8282 8
When guns are tested by the police they can use ANY commercially available pellet. If ONE pellet goes over the 12fpe limit you can be charged with posession of a firearm, 5 year prison sentence. To put the accuracy of your pellet weight and your chrono readings into perspective: Bisley magnum 10.2gn at 713FPS is 11.52 Bisley magnum 10.3gn at 713FPS is 11.63 Bisley magnum 10.4gn at 713FPS is 11.74 Bisley magnum 10.5gn at 713FPS is 11.86 Bisley magnum 10.6gn at 713FPS is 11.97 The FPS readings on any chrono are set at tolerances that can give up to 3 or 4 FPS either way, so at worst you "assume" the pellet is 10.6 grains shooting at 717 FPS is 12.1 FPE (Foot Pounds of Energy) or the best situation for you, the pellet is 10.2 grains shooting at 711 FPS is 11.45 FPE. Assume nothing, the Devil's in the detail! Get the weights down to .2 of a grain and add up to 4fps to your chrono readings and you can't be far wrong! This is of course worst case, but I don't want anybody being nicked for such a stupid mistake! Set your gun to 11.5 with weighed pellets and you can expect a tolerance of around .2 of a ft/lb Hope this helps! Phil Edited October 10, 2011 by Phil8282 Quote Link to post
