Need help on choosing the best gun for the job

Hi all,

 

Not posted in this section before as I usualy stalk rabbits and woodies with an air gun, I'm going to now apply for an FAC. Reason being my auntie has pet ducks and are being attacked by foxes, what gun will I need to kill them? The range I need to shoot is between 50-100yards I guess

 

Any suggestions on gun type, calibre, makes&modle is what I'm after,

 

Also will I be granted to shoot foxes in back gardens? It's about 50yards wide and 150 long

Really think you will be struggling to get FAC permission to shoot foxes in a back garden that size.

 

It may be easier to get a SGC and use a shotgun, but even so, I think you`d be asking for trouble using anything like that in a back garden, esp if you have neighbours.

Thanks for the reply so quick jackinbox I also thought that to start but my aunt was saying some people shoot foxes in much smaller gardens as a job I can't find much info about it though I'd love that job

Yes you'll find it hard getting a FAC for that, even if they gave you a 22 Rimmie I wouldn't want to shoot in those confines, ricochets can be nasty

if i were you king ,i would get in touch with your local feo and have a chat before filling in all the forms and sending them the money.for your fac.you will be very lucky to get either rifle or shotgun for that amount of space to shoot in.they are getting very strict these days ,i've heard of lads getting a 3 month hold back on there shotgun licence untill they have had a bit of experience at clay clubs,they'll be land checks to be done and if they aren't any natural back stops they will want to see high seats to shoot from.its a tricky one but i'm sure someone on here will point you in the right direction,and you never know your luck ,pipcock

Actually pip, they have to issue shotgun, there is no requirement for you to prove good cause as there is with firearms. I would suggest that, given the dimensions, you probably wouldn't want to go firing off a shotgun in the garden mentioned, especially at anything on the ground, but the police can't turn you down for a shotgun certificate unless they have a good reason to decline you, such as poor character, any violent crimes/warnings.

not wanting to rock the boat here, and suggest YOU doing something wrong, but I started off buying a 410 hushpower, with the sole purpose of using it to dispatch urban trap caught foxes, and told this to my FAO on his visit (ok, Im a full time pestie) but that should'ent really make a difference, Id say, get yourself a fox trap, then put in for your shotgun cert, telling them you want the 410 for the above reason, have an area in your aunts garden, that a trap could be moved too, once a fox was caught thats secluded from neighbours, trap on grass/dirt so no ricochets (gun 1/2" from foxes head straight down, even get a tarpulin if neccessary to cover yourself and the cage whilst dispatching, again explaining these reasons to the FAO, if you show that its been thought out propelly, I can't see any problems, your keeping the shot within your boundaries, and using one sub sonic cartridge will not upset neighbours, Ive done it whilst neighbours are hanging out washing and they havent battered an eyelid

anyone with an "open" firearms ticket, could shoot in the garden as you aunt suggests, lots of things need to be checked first though, and prices are normally pretty high per fox, although there is one fellow on here that makes his living from dispatching london foxes, youd mostly be looking at becoming a pest controller, to do that kind of job, money can be shite until your quailified, and your normal work is more likely to be baiting with poisons, for rats,mice, etc, wasps nests and cockroaches

all of my foxing and rabbit shooting get done in my spare time, rather than as paid jobs (apart from urban foxes that is)

thats probably true matt, but they are doing it never the less,its on here somewhere ,and folks are going mad over it but they still diong it, surely you know they can make it up as they go along atb

Cards on the table as always, the chances of anyone being granted a FAC in the circumstances kingjohn1966 is outlining are about as good as finding a pile of Rocking Horse shit in your Aunts Garden.

I've never seen an advert for that job!

Some people do shoot foxes in VERY small gardens, but only in the right circumstances and commonly when they have a fair bit of experience behind them.
