I've no problem with it myself. If your digging your dog and there's movement underground straight away your indicated by the change in tone that the dog has moved position. Is that not the purpose of the tone? If so why would anyone mute it ? I agree. It is handy to have it bleeping away to let you know all is well. Especially with young and inexperienced terriers.
