This it what i find best Saves your back.

Same as many above, i like a short, round headed shovel, with a decent shaft and comfortable grip, got a couple from tool station or screw fix for a couple of quid each. Long shovels are no good for g

thats a mighty fine shovel :laugh:

i also use the bulldog rabbiting spade very good in sandy soil on my spots also use a standard spade thats been cut down on the blade to form a smaller digging blade 7 inch where you put your foot down to 3 inch where it digs and boy does it work i can dig down with this taking out less width to start with if that makes sense

Just another thing, i like to get down on my knees and dig, hence the short handled shovel. It gives more control, and the box always seems to over state the depths, so by using it like this, rather than standing up and using my boot to plunge it in, i feel there is less chance of cutting a stinker in two.

 

PJ - r.e economising - if you shop around you should be able to get a decent shovel for 10-15 quid max, which evened out over a few seasons is f**k all.
