Seeing as theres so many wind up topics latley figured id put up the incrisingly rare "day out" post :p

Decided to have a look out without the kits on monday afternoon when me dad finished his job. We took Charlie Chaser from this forum with one of his kits and his dog... I've never seen a running dog WORK so i was very excited, and he was looking forward to ferreting on some new land and seeing my terrier, so 3 ferrets 3 lads 2 dogs.

we went to my 780 acre permission at around 11:30 and got straight into it. Now, I suggested a spot but of course.. im always wrong so my dad decided to take us to a spot that I really dont enjoy doing until Winter, To be fair, weve had at least 1 bolt from there every time but never get anything due to there being so many hidden holes, holes under bushes we cant get to.. but since we had the dogs I gave him the beneft of the doubt.. after about 5 minuts of my 2 hobs being down we got the bolt... unfortunatly it just ran up the hedge into another hole we couldnt get to as i had expected to happen.. oh well part of the game.. got my sandy hob and waited for my polecat.. 10 minuts and were still waiting.. turns out he had went under the path way thats right next to where we were... we spent the best part of 40 minuts trying to get him due to the fact that im in a pot STILL so unable to crawl under as small spaces.. and we just kept being in the wrong place when he popped up, My mate eventually got him and we headed to a spot I suggested.

Walking up to this spot my terrier marked some holes so we netted up. nice and clear area, fresh digs and droppings. my dad went on one side of the fence, with my terrier me and my mate on the other with his dog.. we got a bolt. unfortunatly it was on the side with my terrier and he put his little heart into getting it.. second one gone.. after this it seemed empty as my sandy was no longer interested,, we had my mates kit down and it was its first time and seemed keen so that was a bonus at least.

Getting to the suggested spot we didnt even stop, it has somehow gone totally over grown and it would of been just as much hassle as before, so we kept walking.. after this not alot happened for around 30 mins... we couldnt find anywhere decent as this farm has been untouched for ages and everything is just overgrown... ferreted a few more spots but nothing.. on heading back my mate saw a rabbit in the middle of the field.. let his dog go but it was too close to the hedge line... at least i saw his dog have a small run.

By around 4 my foot was in agony so we decided to call it a day... not prodoctive at all... saw maybe 4-5 rabbits all day.. but at least it gave the dogs some excorsize and got me out the house..

the end result : 0 rabbits, 1 tired kit, 1 tired terrier, 1 bored lurcher 2 fed up lads 1 lad who cant walk :( .. This used to be a very productive farm for shooting and ferreting... seems i'll have to go back later in the year..

On a good note.. my dad bought his own ferrets yesterday, off the lad we went with.. one of them being the one he took (little polecat hob) and the other a albino jill... got them for £5 each, now im being hounded on things and no doubt in a week he will know more and better than me (at least he likes to think so)

Hopefully ill get out this weekend and have a better more exciting story to tell... and pictures!

sorry if ya got bored reading that.. got to be better than reading the "I have a stoat x weasel x mountain lion and a cat killing EU polecat" posts
