WILF 47,294
What do you mean ? she has been one wierd dog during and after her heat ..... I mean exactly that, bitches can go a bit nutty and be a different dog around the time of their seasons (heat)........like most women really! Is this the only time the dog has done it?...........if it is, I would put it down to her being in season and forget it. See how she carries on over the next few months Quote Link to post
asanley 1,009
Bitches are strange when in season , I ,m pretty sure there are health issues too running a bitch in season ( perhaps Skycat could clarify if thats the case or not } Just as a dog isn,t proven after a season , it,s not a write off either , I would persevere , maybe try running it with an other dog , maybe pick only the easiest rabbits when running on rough ground , you could give rough ground a miss for a bit till shes got more experience , whatever you decide good luck with her . chook1 184
After a season some bitch's can go a bit off kilter and this can affect them, some people call it post season blues, (basicaly its down to hormones) can last up to a month with some dogs. On the other hand - have you always ran her on flat ground, if so it could be inexperance, in that the ruff/bumpy ground feels different to her, she may find it hard to run that type of ground and loose her confidance, if this is the case, it may help if you take her out some times during the day, let her have a play around on that type of ground and let her get used to it. 1 Quote Link to post

Malt 379
lol @ all the hardcore dog men telling him she's shit, a lost cause, won't get better, etc. It's a known fact that bitches can often act up before, during and after a season for a period of time.. Just goes to show the direction the sites gone lately. I asked the same question 4 or 5 years ago on here and got nothing but positive, helpful replies. I'd give her a few weeks pal & if she's not back to her old self, then's the time to worry.. 1 Quote Link to post
bedwhippet 164
my bitch is on heat now doesnt even acknowledge my other dog but prior to her coming into season she wouldnt stop running with him, while shes in season shes wolfing her food down before hand shed just nibble at it, shell come [bANNED TEXT] mate just persevere and let her run with another dog, also i was told that you should always keep a dog off for a further 14 days when they come off heat to let the fat around the heart disperse. other than it just been a typical hormanol female i wouldnt worry to much and the day time walks aroundd the rough ground also sound a good idea as she will get a feel for the surroundings and she will see what is under foot this way, all the best with the bitch as she sounds like she has a lot of potential Quote Link to post
chook1 184
Looking at your last replys - i'd put it down to both, the wierdness will be down to being post seson - my deerhound bitch gets the same its like a depression, they dont want to do anything basicaly - except with mine she half starves herself personaly i would get her on that type of ground more often, like i said start during the day, let her gain confidance and give her time. Tyla 3,179
If she being a moody sod after or during her season try skullcap and valerian tabs from dorwest and raspberry tea, sounds a bit hippyish i know but worked very well on one of my bitches. Its better to do the tea from the very start of her season though. Other than that i'd stop lamping, take her out on varied ground in the day for a couple weeks, when you take her out after let her watch the other dog but dont let her run, make her jealous so she really wants it whatever the ground, might help might not 1 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
There could be two issues here: the first being that she's been in season. Some go moody, depressed, lethargic, not wanting to do anything much. Others run like demons for the first few weeks after a season, then become bags of lard as their muscles go soft, they lose power and can't turn to save their lives. Most of my bitches have gone soft until at least 3 weeks after pups would have been born, had they been truly pregnant. And their muscles, tendons and joints can take a while to get back to proper fitness after that. The second issue could be that the bitch has tendon damage: running on bumpy ground could be jarring her legs a lot more than running on flat land. Fast dogs are more likely to suffer from damage to the main flexor tendons which run down the backs of the front legs: I've had very fast dogs which, unknown to me, damaged these tendons as young dogs, trying to do more than they should at an early age on bad ground or when not properly fit. That sort of damage isn't apparent when the dog runs on level ground, and only if it is really busting a gut to get to its prey. What quite often happens is that the tendon sheath is damaged a bit, not torn or ruptured, which means the tendon can't slide up and down within the sheath as it should. The scarring on the sheath means it is no longer a smooth surface, so the tendon is compromised. When a dog hits the dips in bumpy ground it is more jarring as the dog drops into these hollows. The pain involved could make a dog wary of putting its heart into running hard on ground it knows will hurt it. Just a thought or two. 1 Quote Link to post
