Guest Frank
Ok, just a poll for the hare coursing lads before the ban. My cousin is after a good hare coursing pup, from good stock and has not decided what to get as yet. Hope this helps him a wee bit. His old hare dog died their last year at 16, deer hound x and is now ready for a decent pup. Please can we have experinced folks reply, no offence, but its the experince with these crosses on hare that is needed. The land is mixed, smallish feilds, pasture ( 3 to 4 acres, can be rough). Some bigger. Written replys would be nice too. Thanks all, Frank. Edited March 17, 2007 by Frank Quote Link to post

Guest Frank
O yes, forgot that one , how stupid, of course, they would be pretty good. Cheers Swamper. Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
There is good and bad in all crosses and mixtures so I voted for generations of hare dogs, as some of the best I have seen have been bred this way, best to best, regardless of how they are bred, percentages etc Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
if hes after a dog for smallish field and this is jmo i would go for saluki xgrey /salukixgreyxgrey xwhippet..it will need to be a dog that is up and at them and dosent sit behind a hare and try to wear it down such as your 3/4 saluki type ..now you do get the saluki based type that will do the job quick ..if you know what i mean but on the smallish type fields that can have some rough terrain your dog has got to be able to take aknock or two and is still has to have a fair amoumt of stamina so that x that i mentioned above would be my choice ...as you know frank the dog i have now has killed his fare share of hares this season in the smallish fields but when i took him to the larger feilds round thirsk he didnt fare to well he is a young dog and he was only twelve months old when i gave him a shot at those bigger fields and i have no doubt at all that next season he will be nailing them on the fields such as thirisk and southport ...when fit which he will be next season ..but the fens are a different kettle of fish ....and i dont think he will do well on them but you never no .. hes got some decent breeding behind him his sire was merlin and eve which is grey saluki and his dam was grey bull x minshaw but on the dam side the grey was the indian joe who was whippet grey ..i think the if you work it out the grand sire to my dog is indian joe ....iam after another pup myself this summer as i bought this one i have now for an allrounder type dog ..but what iam after next is a 3/4 saluki type for the bigger fields .. i got of on one then and got side tracked but you should get the jist of things if you no what i mean... ... Guest MOLLY
As im learning, im led to believe there are saluki x greys and line bred saluki x greys....quite different dogs for coursing, or so i took it? MOLL. Quote Link to post
hare_dogs 0
id like the saluki x whippet x greyhound type jmo. Quote Link to post
luke 2
i hunt much the same ground as you are talking about i would go for whippet x greyhound dog over a saluki x greyhound bitch this will give you nice medium sized dog if properly bred. i wouldent go more than a quarter saluki or they wont be sharp enough from personal experiance. Quote Link to post
Ricky-N.p.p 0
I voted saluki x grey...but after thinking about it 2 of the best hare dogs i have seen were 2nd cross collie grey Quote Link to post

doxhope 2
On that sort of land, which is more or less what Ive always worked my dogs on, Ive voted GOOD lurcher x lurcher, the best hare killers Ive seen in my area are dogs of this breeding, I was always a profit hunter, plus Ive seen some of what was classed as the best hare coursing dogs in my area, these dogs travelled to the fens to do their graft, few did it here, the ground and terrain can make all the difference....If the vote had been on the fens, of course my vote would have been completely different Quote Link to post
whin 463
after coursing for three decades the dogs ive picked were saluki line bred ,tor of dartmoor x genuine ones , and my own collie line theyre not the run of the mill collie crosses ,for some reason they can do 3 minutes on winter hares and are a hundred per cent triers ,ive got a whippet grew she can catch hares but there not got the feet for running any were all the best Quote Link to post
