In that respect, you are applying for a one for one variation. Even if you want to buy a gun of the same calibre you need a variation on your certificate to do so. Maybe that's where the confusion came from

That is correct you do not have to specify before you buy,but once you have aquired said firearm then and only then do you :good: have to inform them of the action type

When applying for FAC, if i put down 22lr and it gets accepted, can i buy an semi automatic ? Or do i after specify?

When filling in the application you will need to put down "Calibre : .22lr - Type: Rifle", this will enable you to purchased any form of action. You wouldn't get away with it if applying for a .308 ;)

Mainly because any rifle that is self loading (read semi-auto) or pump action falls outside section one of the firearms act, with the exception of .22 rimfire calibres. This poor draughting of the legislation means it is legal to own a .22WMR semi auto (upwards of 300 ft.lb) but it is illegal to own a .17HMR in semi auto, even though it only puts out about 200 ft.lb.

don't forget the firearms laws are old now and to be fair they need updating. the only reason a 17 hmr in semi auto form is illegal is because the hmr wasn't even out when those laws where wrote.
