DanRaistrick 53
Looking at getting myself a dog to take out with the ferrets and mark the holes just in case the rabbits manage to slip through somewhere, and i was just wondering what kind of dogs people think will be good for it? most of the permission i have is in small quarries so a big skinny lurcher wont be too good for it :/ i've got a patterdale terrier at the minute which is more than capable of the job but he is just too much of a nut job! he kills everything in site.. including sheep, cats, ferrets, birds and occasionally goes for other dogs (he's brilliant with people if you know him. soft as muck). how do you think a bedlington whippet will perform in the rocky conditions? or am i better off with another terrier but one without such anger issues? :L cheers Quote Link to post

darbo 4,776
cant use a lurcher on my permission. i have a beddie spot on marking dog. will never catch a heathy rabbit on the run,but hopefully not too many slip a net. all the permission is in woodland and he does the job fine. Just try to make sure you get a pup from dogs that are doing the job on a regular basis. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Used to use gun dogs to mark, but then they would just sit there at attention during the actual ferreting and not budge a muscle if a rabbit skipped the net. Can't imagine watching a spaniel/lab chase a bunny and not be wanting to shoot it. Most terriers and lurchers will mark warrens if given enough exposure. We use a whippet, a collie x and a bull/whip/grey/beddy lurcher and all three do it. Quote Link to post

j1985 1,984
I only started ferreting last year and I used my pet Jack Russell, she marked up like she'd been doing it her whole life..only problem was she decided to go down a hole and I had to dig the twat out! Funny now but not at the time. Quote Link to post
