when do we say a dog has been tested to its maximum?

It depends on the dog and it`s job eg I`d expect a good lightweight rabbitting dog to be able to run all night a couple of nights a week,whereas a heavy foxing dog may be expected to have half a dozen good runs a night.Both could be well tested in their own area of expertise.

I think its down to the owner and the dog. As for tested to the max you'll only ever know that when it quits its job.

Tomo. How longs a piece of string? A proper dog to me(only my opinion) is a dog that has proven itself over several seasons and regularly, not once a fortnight, and perhaps occasionally that dog has been pushed beyond its limit and still performed. The thread title "how much work is too much" is another question..............

I've been lamping or ferreting for about 3 hours every other day with a 90 min mooch on the days inbetween....thats not overdoing it is it? we're lamping on foot so I'd say she probably getting no more than 15-20 slips in 3 hours when lamping.

Somthing that can go out 4 nights a week and run fine without running stale , But too be honest never mind the dog too a degree here think of the man holding the lead that keep its fitness up just that little extra and feeds it that little better and goes that extra mile too me that a PROPER man

This can only be answered by you knowing the dog. For me and my last pup, that would of been too much, im in no rush, BUT for your pup that may be fine

Like has already been said by the window licker, its not the nights or days in a week worked, but its nights or days worked over a few seasons, thats when you know what your dog has in the tank, the heart , then you can gauge it a proper working dog or not. Every dog is different, thats when the experience of the handler comes to the fore, or not as is the case sometimes.

 

again, just my humble opinion, but i wish i'd have said this before Simoman, that twat gets in first every time, clever git lol.
