mole trapper 1,693 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 In the last two days i have been called out to two new rabbit jobs, first one was a small camp site, the other a small dairy farm of about two hundred acres, both places swarming with rabbits, What did they both have in common, EASY, neither of them could find anyone willing to have a pop at them, so they now have to pay me to reduce the numbers. Now usually when i get these calls every tom dick and harry have messed with them, made the job a real bitch and turned their back, So last night i thought go and have a quick look at the camp site with my mate Smackumdown, well in short it was bunny hunter mecca, in just over an hour in one field we shot over fourty rabbits with the rimmy, by the way this field was only about two acres tops, the banks full of sets no shite around holes, basically ferreters heaven. Going to suss out the dairy farm saturday night. So back to my heading, why every week are these words read in all the sporting press, " wanted permission" , i am born and bred farming stock and i am telling you farmers dont pay for anything they dont have to, so why when people get permission why dont they fullfill their initial promises and reduce the rabbits instead of turning up a couple of times and getting bored or whatever, Dont get me wrong i dont give a monkeys because its all money in the bank, i just cant understand the rational. MikeTheDog 153 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Maybe it's 'cos moat ferreters only go out ferreting for the craic, just a couple o hours now and again, where as only a few go at it proper on a regular basis with a well proven working stock of keen ferrets and perhaps a good dog.. I'm no pest controller, but I do it as a service to those who give permission to shoot game during the season. Last year I had 2 solid weeks at rabbits on one guys land, got a bit tedious but I kept at it. When I wasn't available one of my brothers worked it, just to keep on top of it. Like ye said, most guys just want to spend an hour or two as it pleases them. But to do it right means lots of time, and a lot of people won't bother. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
mole trapper 1,693 Posted March 16, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Maybe i am a little biased here but, if someone goes along cap in hand saying they will sort out his pest problems and he gives them a chance, then they do not or are unable to fulfill there promise it is no wonder farmers are so carefull about who they allow on their ground, i can well remember when i was doing it for fun, and made damned sure the farmers saw me around and what i had acheived for fear of someone moving in on my ground. I have some areas where, as you say, I make sure I fulfil my obligation to deliver the service expected. Guest markbrick1 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Maybe i am a little biased here but, if someone goes along cap in hand saying they will sort out his pest problems and he gives them a chance, then they do not or are unable to fulfill there promise it is no wonder farmers are so carefull about who they allow on their ground, i can well remember when i was doing it for fun, and made damned sure the farmers saw me around and what i had acheived for fear of someone moving in on my ground. like you i have thousands of acres of permission down here in cornwall and cant get on it all, at least twice a week a farmer will phone me to ask me to shoot a fox are control some rabbits,My heart is in the lurchers and not in the rifles,but you try and get permission around lancashire were i come from when i visit and again like you iam from farming stock i still have to do a bit of poaching never mind i grew up with most of the farmers there policy is a strict no lurchers but look most farmers have good reason,Anyway what iam saying is weve got it good down here and unless youve travelled around a bit you wouldnt know what its like for a few of the lads elsewere in the country thanks mark Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I do it for fun, not pest control and I dont enjoy killing a load then selling them. Obviously it needs doing, but Im not the one for it Once I have around 3 or 4 thats the day over for me, I can only eat so many fecking Rabbits! lol I have got some permission at the momment, for a Shoot, luckily there laid back and dont care how many I get, so long as I beat for them unpaid lol.
