Reevo79 3
When doing maintenance to my traps i usually use a wire brush to give them a good clean up, spray with WD 40 round the springs and were the metal touch's. Just wondered if anyone else does similar maintenance as someone told me that you shouldnt spray WD40 as the moles will smell it, but this hasnt been the case i have pretty much set the traps the day i have done the maintenance to them and caught with them the next day i have checked them. Im pretty sure moles havent got the sense of smell people think they have as i wouldnt be catching them but wondered if anyone else has any information on this topic. Cheers Reevo. Quote Link to post

3175darren 1,101
Odd really,I think we are taught and taught not to get scent on traps,I keep mine in buckets with a couple of mole hill tops thrown in, but dont knock what works, Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
What are peoples opinons on moles having good scenting powers? Everything i have read about mole trapping suggests avoiding touching the traps, be interesting how well developed their smell is..... Quote Link to post

longnetter 32
I'm not convinced about this scent thing...I use mole traps straight out of the box..brand new.. and still catch no problem. Edited November 21, 2011 by longnetter Quote Link to post
budgie123 163
i personally thinks a lot is old wives tales. i took traps straight from the box set them and caught no problems. we get traps at work which are taken straight from box and catch. if they were contaminated with something very strong like petrol possibly be a different matter. Steve Albano 21
In my experience, scent on the traps doesn't matter much, but tuning the traps is very important. Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
All my traps for moles and rabbits when bought go straight into a big vat of creosote for a week, they last for years. Quote Link to post
