what marks out of ten would you give yourself

Recommended Posts

2 weeks ago maybe a 5

last week a 1

I'll keep going.

A dog i had as a kid done aything i asked and didn't need training done it himself I reckon........ although we did spend every spare hour together which helps.

thats a very valid point with dogs , if you can form a bond in a way that makes the dog believe that anything you want ,he wants, its not training as such ,its more of a understanding between you,,

The dog I have is great will walk to heal on and off lead and fetch back to hand. The bitch is a nightmare will not heal pulls your arm out gives me blisters and wont part with anything. I took the dog ferreting for the first time couple of weeks ago with a friend and he learnt very quickly only had to tell him once he seems to have more of a brain but I wouldnt dare take the bitch or there would be no ferret wouldnt even try.

My old Doberman, Tango, was professionaly trained to a very high standard by an Indian Army Dog Trainer, before I got her, and I couldn't hope to reach that standard with a Lurcher ! I consider myself a good dog WORKER, but not a very good dog TRAINER ! If they come back when called, jump, work the beam, retrieve to a half decent standard, then I'm happy !! I think the most important thing with a Lurcher is that it CATCHES !! Everything after that is a bonus !! LOL !!

Cheers.

id give myself a 7 i think if you have enough time and patience you can get any dog to do what you require in terms of obedience but i think over training can definately be detrimental to a working dogs performance especially lurchers.if the dog is so well drilled in obedience that takes away a certain amount of drive in its work as the first and foremost thing in that dogs mind is the thought to react to your command now that command may only take a second but as we all now that second could be the difference in a catch or the dog not quite getting up to its quarry before it slips under a fence or down a hole for example.dont get me wrong i cant abide unruly lurchers i think the retrieval of game caught(if carryable!), heeling, jumping on command and of course coming back when you whistle em is pretty essential and mybe sitting and staying if you do alot ferreting with longnets(i can vouch for this as i used to ferret a long hedgerow on my own near where i live id run the net through the hedge at one end and sit the dog at the other, slip the ferret or two in the middle then man the net they always bolted and ran straight down the hedge so whichever way they went there was trouble)but any more and the dog is too reliant on command rather than to follow its natural hunting instinct anyways thats enough for now iv just finished a long shift at work im guna have a kip more later probley

a strange question i dont give my self any pionts let othere tell the tale who have hunted with me , dog trainig is easy once you no how and understand them , less dogs mean better for me ive had and got saluk who fetch, jump in pick ,up with game , others who catch and drop ,had collie types who could do basicaly more than enough to compete against any dog in fetchng stakes stoping on command etc,im a hunter first then dog trainer if i stopped hunting dogs would be giving away or put down humanely ,and get a another type of dog or none
