sibaldib 6
I am just about to get a .223 for foxing, In all probability a Tikka T3. I like the laminated stainless, but finances will probably dictate that I get the Hunter or Lite model. I want a moderator, but have been bemused by the wide number of options available. I have also heard horror stories from shooting colleagues of some models rotting from the inside after only a year. I realise that I will have to pay a reasonable amount for a good model and I therefore need some recommendations for a moderator that fulfills the following criteria: 1) Moderates the report efficiently 2) Does not extend the length of the rifle excessively 3) Is not too heavy and therfore unblances the rifle. 4) Can be dismantled for cleaning Any helpful advice would be gratefully received. Thanks Sib Quote Link to post

akton 15
I would use a T8 but to be truthful it all comes down to budgets, look around and see what the reviews on moderatos are, some are good some are bad. 1) Moderates the report efficiently Some fare better than others, but will cut down the noise considerably, try shooting with/without to compare 2) Does not extend the length of the rifle excessively Most moderators for this calibre will extend the length of the barrel 3) Is not too heavy and therfore unblances the rifle. You will need weight at the front of your barrell, in order to prevent too much recoil,a .223 will recoil 4) Can be dismantled for cleaning............................ Most can be dismantled and all can be cleaned good luck jon Edited September 15, 2011 by akton Quote Link to post

Thanks Sib You will have to go a long way to beat a Predator 8 COMPACT to cover all your criteria! I make no suggestion it is the BEST moderator, whatever that may mean, but it offers a good package of moderation, size, weight, price and is Fully stripable! It does for me and I have one on all my centrefires, .223, .243,. 308 Quote Link to post
markha 99
I like my Pred8. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Would avoid a t8 if I was you mate, unless you are going to take it off and spray it liberally inside with oil every time you have fired it, or it will rot away inside and destroy the crown on your rifle,(that goes for all c/f mods) I will reiterate get a PES you cant go wrong Quote Link to post
activeviii 8
Pes all day long on a 22cf. nice and thin over barrel. adds about 4" to length but is only just over 1" thick. by far the best. Quote Link to post

JohnGalway 1,043
I've a T8, after hearing and relaying the horror stories I've heard over the years. It's into it's second year now and looks fine. Rifle maker told me a couple of things, which I've altered to the below: I bought a fan heater. When I get home I turn it on and put the mod in front of it, being mindful not to melt the bushing! This evaporates most of the moisture inside, it also heats the metal for the next step... Spray WD40 into the business end liberally. Since the metal is warm the WD40 will slosh about nicely covering all the burnt powder residue inside the T8. It's the interaction between moisture and burnt powder that causes the problem. Though, I believe the T8 was made to be "disposable" initially. Lastly, plastic bag and a long sock. Soak the sock in oil, put the mod into the sock for storage after doing the above steps. Never store a mod on a rifle. I also don't have any type of cover on the T8. I like to see the metal and know what's going on. Sure, one you take apart is one you can clean the bejesus out of. I'm interested in how long the T8 will last me while I follow the above regime.
