Got a 6 month whippet x

Recommended Posts

Scared of it's own shadow! Absolutely everything, especially any toy that squeaks she will do anything to get away from it! I can't even disciplin the dog because as soon as you say no it runs away, she went to run out the field the other day I shouted no! here! she looked at me all scared and carried on to walk out till I said good girl here a few times whilst walking away from her. Only had her 6 weeks, but how the hell am I ment to train something that's scared of everything!! Never had a dog like this before

helpful...

its gonna take a while, a big bag of treats and lots on encouragement! the more you try and work with the dog the more it will get to know you and respect you. you need to show the dog that u are not going to hurt it and u need to build up trust. this will take a lot of patience though! once you have achieved this then you can start training it with the basics. i e sit, stay etc. ATB

nervousness is untrainable, dead right ,because its a instinct, the only thing that will overcome it is a desire,a want, all animals in the wild are totally fear based, instinctive,,and its a want or desire that brings them into contact with us,,mostly food,

a dog is somewhat different,,with working dogs their biggest pull can be drive, not in every case but most,,drive as in hunting ,sniffing round, chasing ,killing etc

if you can give the mutt a desire to focus on ,some sort of toy ,tug or otherwise ,dont leave it with him , ,you will have some sort of a handle on him ,something he can focus on in times of panic,,

you will probably have to create an interest first,,but once you have the dog hooked ,its personality will come out,,

and you then train through drive if you get my drift,,

hand feed,,and play , include feeding while playing, best of luck

I am guessing this dog hasn't been socialised, lived a normal life, been out and about to get to know what the world is all about. Now she's past the stage where her brain can truly adapt to everything new she meets: that window is shut. You may, with a lot of patience, time, encouragement, get her to the stage where she might be of use in the field, but if she's that scared, I doubt it. Seen it before in pups which have been shut in a kennel until 5 or 6 months old. Hancock sells them from time to time: IMO they are a huge amount of hard work, and many never come right.

Or she's only been shouted at, never learned how to please the owner, never known how to get it right.

You can't train a dog in this state, as Casso said. It needs tiny steps, building on each step, day by day, week by week.

Start by finding out the pup's favourite treat: bit of cooked bacon, sausage, whatever. Put a bag of small, pea sized pieces in your pocket, and establish a recall word. such as Come. Give pup titbit each time it comes, then praise: Good Girl or whatever. Then start walking the pup from your house, just a few hundred yards. Sit on the kerb, watch the world go by. (Unless you live on a main road of course!) Each day, go a bit further, try and let her see something new, but don't do more than she can cope with at any one time. If she shows signs of panicking, go back to the start, just a short distance every day, letting her gradually absorb the knowledge of things around her.

Pups learn to cope with the world by venturing out from the nest, a few feet at a time to begin with, then further and further, always knowing their route back to safety, just like wild animals do. It's your job to make sure she feels safe wherever you and she are, but you can't do that until she trusts you to protect her, and she can't learn to trust you until you have shown that you are worth trusting.

So always keep calm, never shout at her, reward each time she comes to you, and in time you may be able to move on to toys, as Casso suggested. For the moment I doubt she's able to focus on a toy, but with a bit of luck, tasty titbits might give her that focus on you. She must always see you as the source of good things, safety and calm.

hope this helps.

ive had 2 dogs like this mate, the saluki i got now was the worst. she is coming along alot better now she is just over 10 months. she still very nevous but alot better. she used to run away at the slightest noise, piss on the floor if i dident talk to her like a baby and hide if anything happend like a nock on the door or a stranger was around. she wouldent eat tit bits or play out side the house she always looked over her shoulder ecpecting something to come get her. it wasent helped by some c*nt with a big bull x having no control and it attacking her when she was a small puppy.

anyway my advice is to stick with it mate, its taken me 9 months to get to this point with mine and she is coming good now.

never ever shout at her or get angry, just be with her play with her take her out as much as possible in busy places and give her reassurance that everything is ok. once she see`s that your not bothered by the things going on around she will learn that not everything is out to get her.

it will be hard mate.

Cheers for the advice, she is alot better than when I got her ALOT! She wouldn't even go near anyone when I picked her up. And yes penny your right I think she was just left in the kennel until I took her on. She had literally no muscle on her at all, you could give her a lil push on the side and she would nearly fall over where she was so weak. She likes to be in the garden and even went up to the ferret on the floor tonight. Only time will tell, I'll just keep at it. Cheers all
