get him to the vet, could be more than a pulled muscle, better to be safe than sorry

if you wont to give your dog a pain killer i would say iburafen it allso doublles up as an anti inflamatory so that will take the swelling down as well as kill the pain

go to your local greyhound vet, pet vets are money grabbing c**ts

I hope you don't mind me being blunt here, but if the leg has really "tripled in size" (your own words) I'd not be waiting around to get it to the vet, any vet will do in an emergency. Bad fractures can cause immediate swelling, and waiting to see if it is any better tomorrow could mean the difference between recovery or losing a leg or being put down. Not to mention the cruelty involved in leaving an animal in severe pain.

Can see your point skycat but i didnt want to be running the vets for a pulled muscle im relativly new to the dog game and havent had much expirence with injury,s someone who has would be able to make a decision like that on the spot im not that fortunate so thought id ask more expirenced folk anyway the dog has come round abit after ibrefen and is putin weight on his leg now wich has eased my mind a little so fingers crossed cheers key

A pulled muscle won't cause swelling to the extent you describe, and as you say, you're relatively new to the game. Which leg is it? Where is the swelling? Got a pic?

Now if the muscle was badly torn, say the thigh muscle in the hind leg, the swelling could be caused by blood coming from the muscle. In which case you should have ice packed the leg, or run the leg under a cold hose for half an hour, immediately you got home. If there is a badly torn muscle, the way you treat it will determine how well the muscle heals, long term. If not treated correctly the dog may run again, but won't have the power or elasticity in the muscle to run well, turn well or run for very long at a time as the scar tissue will stop the muscle working correctly.

you say the dog hit a dip, which would indicate to me a compression of a leg/joint ect excessive strain/pressure and not an extention of the leg thus pulling the muscle if it makes sense? get it to the vet mate no expert but it sounds to me like broken leg.
