Seen similar myself: lamping a rabbit, dog goes out to rabbit, next minute dog's coming back to to me with rabbit in mouth and a fox comes from behind the dog flat out, then sees me and side steps me and dog and belts off into the night, almost brushing my leg. And no, dog didn't drop rabbit and take off after the fox: if I remember rightly it was a young dog on one of her first trips out. The same dog later tried to retrieve a fox to me: I saw two sets of eyes coming out of the darkness, dog's eyes as normal, then the second set of eyes at an angle below the dog's eyes. As she got nearer I could see she was carrying a big cub (September time I think) by the neck. She'd never been on a fox before and obviously just tried to pick it up like a rabbit and retrieve it to me! As they got nearer the fox must have struggled like feck, and got away. She went on to become one of the better fox dogs I've owned. Bloody hilarious at the time though: I could see her face as she got nearer, almost see her thinking: "by God, this is a big rabbit, and it smells funny too!" She had no kill instinct as a young dog, but learned to dispatch foxes very quickly in her second season.

Never actually seen a fox attempt to take a rabbit from a dogs mouth but have seen on numerous occasions especially at the start of the season when there are green cubs about, foxes actually running into the beam and close to the dog if it's retrieving a squealing rabbit.

Well if you dont believe that you'll definitely not believe this....I'm sceptical but since I know the lads well I've no reason to doubt them... Two of my mates out lamping dogs catch fox. Other fox comes running in from the hedges and bones one of the dogs and runs like hell. Finish off with the first fox, got dogs back on the slip and then got a go at the ''crazy'' fox... Missed it though..... True

took a pup out a few years she was maybe 10-11mths at the time, walked up to the gap in the hedge and put lamp on field was ploughed but there was a fox sat around 50 yrd away with something in its mouth, was in 2 minds but slipped the pup anyway, if anything to loosen her off, she run this fox over the brow of the field and out of sight, lamp off and she came back with a rabbit in her mouth. fox must have dropped its munch and motored away and the bitch retrieved it back all chuffed to bits
