Irish Lurcher 1,013
What is his retrieve like?? I had a whip some time ago and the f****r used to eat the rabbits, mind you he was a rescue so only god knows what way he way brought up, I think you are on the right road with the pup, but you must make it clear to the pup that the rabbit is yours by going back to the roots, ya must make it known to the pup that the lure is yours and that he must bring it back to you, be firm with him in re- training. Good luck Quote Link to post

Kepp going hes still a pup he'll learn. Quote Link to post
chook1 184
He's still a youngster and probably just needs more training, toys are totaly different to the real thing - once they catch then instints(sp) will kick in in that what they are catching is actualy food and thats what they was bred to do - catch their own food. If you've only trained him with just normal toys, then he's not going to realy know that he has to bring that rabbit back to you, what i would have done, is once you get the rabbit off the dog - and youve dispactiched(sp) it, have a play, tie the lead or what ever you have round the rabbits legs, tease the dog and throw it out as far as your lead will go, get the dog to retrive it, then call in the dog, you have controal - so you can bring the dog in to you with the rabbit, prase the dog etc once youve had a bit of playing, lead the dog up - but let the dog carry the rabbit, so it learns to trust you. As far as your pup is concerned - its got a high value prize and it just dosent trust you yet to give anything that high value up, after all if i tried to take 20 quid off you - would you give it up ?
