He seems brand new thanks for asking Dotty...all being well this next blackweek we'll see what he's capable of if we can get amongst some gear and the weather is favourable to us? Like i said he's no world beater and certainly no looker but i'm hopeful he'll put some gear to bed these next few months lol. Cheers Andy.

nice one looks like you had a good night

Thanks Johnny ..like you say it's no good having a dog that DOESN'T suit the type of land you hunt yourself, horses for courses is what springs to mind lol. ATB fella have a good un yourself. Cheers A

thanks for all the comments lads   here is a couple of his pups (Chief & Reggie)   Don & Chief   Chief & Swift   Reggie

Good to see Don a few years on. He really does look the part of a tough ugly collie type, but like you said, he fills the bags ;) and thats what counts Did you keep in touch with any of the litter mates?

Its tricky business taking a keen dog out. I used to try and take the edge off my Poppy. But you cant/shouldnt have to do it every time.they have to matrue at some point.....and it aint good being a shield bearer.

Hope he keeps running long and well for you ;)

There is only Don and one of his sisters over here in the UK matey, the remainder are over in Ireland, one never got to see a rabbit,it was crazy but is still alive with my mates brother and used as a guard dog on a small holding, great with his own kids but i'd say it's a ticking time bomb? My mate who bred the litter and his other brothers have the remainder and they are doing very well, one small black bitch is making quite a name for itself for it's rabbiting and hare exploits over there and also would you believe it for it's quota of DAYTIME hare catches lol. They all seem to have a liking for the big un's and over in Ireland the majority are Red/Sika or Hybrids and they get their share :whistling: ..couldn't agree more with your point about the keeness and maturing at some stage BUT this dog is just so bloody keen lol,he'll either learn the easy way or he'll end up worst case scenario dead!! Either way he'll get the gear thrown infront of him..no cotton wool here to wrap him up lol ;) .Atb Andy oh and how's wee Poppy coming along now?

That old dog Johnny was lurcher x collie and Don is also lurcher x collie, the lurcher in Don was a son of the old red dog, there was only the red dog from his litter that i knew of that even caught a rabbit lol but he made up for the remainder haha, the way they are bred Johnny (lurcher x collie) there is always going to be litter wastage..it's a very chancy breeding but if you are lucky you may get something half decent? It's selecting the right one thats the problem though haha? The old dog threw a mixture of types but he covered all varients of bitches over the years whereas Don has covered just the one bitch of my bro in law who needed a youngster to run on and even his pups are a mixed bag, some are way bigger than he even though the bitch was barely his size and some are a fair bit smaller and very racy in looks..like i say you are taking big risks when breeding a lurcher to a collie but i'm now on my 2nd and if this un Don can do a 1/4 of the other he'll do fo me lol. ATB Andy.

Thanks for that mate..........like you say risky to put a lurcher to a collie, glad to see people willing to take them risks and glad its paid off for you.

Look forward to hearing a bit more about the Don dog this season.

It's his 2nd full season Dotty,he started away last term fine then cracked a bone in his hind leg jumping a metal railing fence,we then got that frost and snow for nigh on 15 weeks solid and it was mid January when that relented and i thought whats the point of taking him lamping and possibly giving him a hard time with the chance of him going lame on the same leg again and ruining him before i'd gave him the chance really so the lads just mooched about daytime with him and took him ferreting,he caught just about everything there is to catch with a dog during these times and not just the odd one,we treat him in the porta-mag all the while and then with the summer on his back he's come back great with not a sign of that injury,he was lame after the last day he went lamping on that leg but he had just tweaked a muscle,he's fine after Sunday so all's looking good now,he's been out today for training and had a spell in the porta-mag to relieve any niggles and stiffness, slight change to his feeding program just now too, so just gonna keep him ticking over now until the moons gone then fingers crossed we'll get to see what he can do? ATB Andy.
