Lab 10,979
the bitch is 4 and im not breeding her NOW but even if i did. i am breeding for myself and dont want to sell the pups as have homes for them anyway. Im wasnt wanting to breed for money.. i was only asking Shes not a worker she has taken a few rabbits, rats but not a worker just a great dog. Her great grandparents etc are owned by us, and have only ever had a litter once and we have never taken money for any of the pups, Being a great dog is no reason to breed from any bitch, there are thousends of great bitchs and dogs in rescues. my deerhound is a great dog, fantastic temperment etc, some of her siblings and her sire have done well in the show ring, ive been asked before to breed from her and i know i could get homes in a heart beat - but she will never be bred from no matter how much of a great dog she is - because there is no reason to breed from her other than shes a great dog. What about when she gets older then.......wouldn't you like to have a pup from her is she is so good and others will be biting your hand off for the pups.......or are you just going to give up with working dogs when she retires.... Lab my deerhound isnt a worker and never will be, she is purely a pet. And if you read the other persons post - that dog is not a worker either so what would the dog be retireing from other than being a pet. My apologies i just took it since were on a hunting forum you hunted.........sorry... Quote Link to post

I was trying to make a point to a post - in that just cause a pet dog is great, dosent mean that it needs breeding from. And FYI my lurcher is spayed, so even if she does turn out to be a great worker, she can never be bred from. Edited September 15, 2011 by chook1 Quote Link to post

I reckon all dogs that are just classed as pets and have no working attributes should never have pups. But theres a big market for them so it will continue forever. You also wrote "Being a great dog is no reason to breed from a bitch".......i disagreed on that for working dogs only! Infact being a great dog is exactly the kind of reason that i think a bitch should be bred from if you are planning to keep your line going... 1 Quote Link to post

I agree if its a great Working dog and is proveing its self out in the field time and time again, then yes i have no quarms with someone wanting to keep their line going but a saying its a great dog dosent mean its great out in the field. Well a 'great' dog to me is a dog that is 'great' at its job. You cant get a 'great' dog that looks good and wins rosettes or a 'great' dog that can sing when x factor comes on!!! Maybe some folk dont have a scooby what a great dog is.... Quote Link to post

Penda 3,341
in my opinion a dog has to earn the right to be bred off has to prove its worth over a good few seasons single handed and when ive bred dogs its been for my own purpose i have sold pups out the litter but thats only to cover jabs food wormers etc etc etc i always pick a dog that i have saw worker and it is what im looking for not just a picture of a dog that someone has put up and told me it has done this and then and then you find out OH DEAR its bred a bunch of pups not up to the job SHOW PONNIES! Guest FTBBTH
im not a idiot i already have a home for 6 puppies from this girl and i have other dogs of both sexes which are all rescue dogs that i neutered. and she will be done too just want to carry on the bloodline, you know nothing about me and my dogs, they are my life and i would never breed without caring what happens to every single puppy! even thou ive never seen your girl i can imagine how beautiful she really is already, and it would be an honour for me and my beautiful boy to line her for you,i think the babies would be beautiful and would fetch a good price if homes had to be advertised for. for some reason that post is a little disturbing you want to have a 3 way with your dog against another dog you have never seen............... think before you say  this must be embarrssing for you Quote Link to post
