k9delboy 138
I am going to shoot pigeons at my local football ground and have been told that i can get bullets for my 22 rimfire that wont puncture the tin roof when shot. Is this true and where can i buy them. The birds are in the rafters approx 30ft up if this helps, Thanks in advance,Del. P.S.I dont have an airgun or i would have used it. Quote Link to post
akton 15
DEL :::::::::: Sorry to tell you this mate, but the ballistics of a .22 rimfire bullet will penetrate the old tin roof and dependant on the area, if it is populated there will be alot of injuries . before any shooting is done conduct a safety assessment and think about what you are going to do..BE SENSIBLE AND GET AN AIR RIFLE your local firearms dept would be very very interested in this !!!!!!!!!!!! tegater 789
Totally agree. The person who told you this may have meant shotshell cartridges, but they are loaded with size 12 shot, and are only any good on rodents to about 10 metres. Certainly not pigeons. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Only other ammunition I can think of would be either .22 Short or .22 Caps or "CB" shells. The latter have about 30 ft/ls of energy IIRC. I'd still use an air rifle. Far Safer. Can you not borrow one just for this job? Quote Link to post
k9delboy 138
I have managed to obtain a young chap that stays local and is doing a college course to become a gamekeeper to help me with this problem. I have permission to take him with me to shoot pigeons with an airgun so it is doing him a favour too. I have an airgun but it wouldnt knock a sh*te off a dyke and someone told me that i could purchase a weaker bullet just for this job. There is no way on this earth that i would fire a normal 22 rim fire bullet towards metal girders and tin roofing for fear of ricochet and serious damage to people (i.e. ME) or buildings. That is the reason for this site guys, to obtain advice when required from others and to assist each other if possible. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply, Del. Quote Link to post
k9delboy 138
Just back in from shooting pigeons and the young guy shot 4with his air rifle and 4 took off in the dark. I saw a lot more yesterday sitting in the rafters during the daylight and expected there to be a hell of a lot more than 8 but as i shone the lamp i spotted what im sure was a sparrow hawk roosting on one of the girders. Im thinking this is maybe why there were not so many here tonight. Ah well, there will always be another night to sort them out, Del. Quote Link to post
tegater 789
A successful trip then! Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
Nice one - air rifles will always have a role to fill Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Sounds like a decent result, at least a good start. These are the rounds I was describing above, not sure where their use fits in but about the same as a decent FAC air rifle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_CB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_BB Quote Link to post
k9delboy 138
Thanks for the help, Del. Quote Link to post
