Bankzi 2
I have two hobs and wanting to introduce to them raw meat as they have been fed on kitten food and biscuits, whats the best way to get them switched over to raw meat? Mix it in then gradually put more and more meat in? Quote Link to post

rob190364 2,594
I found the best way is to give them a daily small meal of minced meat mixed with chopped liver (50/50), then gradually increased the % of meat until they eat just meat. When I first tried getting mine onto meat if I didn't give them biscuits and just meat (with no mince), they just wouldn't eat it even if I left it in for 2 or 3 days. I've never known a ferret to not like liver so this method should work. Quote Link to post

Any raw meat except pork or processed meat with added salt. If giving cooked meat make sure there's no bones in it. Some people give dry ferret food, opinions differ on this....I've found it makes ferrets fat but that's just my experience of it, other people are happy with it. Cat and dog food doesn't have the right levels of protein for ferrets and has other additives they can't digest. Liver, kidney and eggs fine in small quantities. Don't give milk. Raw whole carcasses best......that's about it really Quote Link to post

I think there's more chance of them getting parasites/worms from raw pork aswell. Quote Link to post
patterdalejoel 669
its natural to a ferret, if its hungry it will eat it. Quote Link to post
max abell 196
If it's fur or feather mate just put it in the rest comes natural we rescued a jill a couple of years ago it had never seen raw meat only ever fed on dry gave it a woodie and it devoured it in no time and the good thing is she turned out to be a good steady little worker in the end Quote Link to post
Bankzi 2
So rabbits then, do i just chuck it in as it is or gut it? Ive got bits of raw meat from my local butchers given to me so they are loving that at the minute Quote Link to post
Ferret mad Dave 65
Gut it mate Quote Link to post
semiautolee 9
what about pigeons?? chuck them in whole?? Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
Just open the door and throw it in..... rabbit, pigeon, duck whatever you like......you dont need to gut it or wipe its arse!! Quote Link to post
Col_c88 41
I always gut a rabbit then freeze it.. obviously defrost before giving it to them, leave in the heart liver n kidneys (providing there ok) and fur, also leave the head on... i know in the wild it makes no difference but its how i got told to do it and it became a (good) habbit, pigeon i throw in and its gone by the time it would of needed to come out.. those are my 2 prefered foods for ferrets but its not always possible (i have an injury and not getting out as much yet) so in that case i feed them ..raw..minced meat, chicken, turkey, eggs (not often) and dried ferret food when low on meat. just out of curiosity.. whats the problem with cooked bones?.. i dont do it, just interested also... A mate of mine whos life is hunting recently told me ferrets dont need protein... yet everyone on this site has told me otherwise.. his reasoning was because rabbit has very little and in the wild that would be there diet... just wondering why he told me this. He is not stupid when it comes to hunting hes done it all and is a well known bird man now, i actually got my 2 jill kits off him a little bit ago. Quote Link to post
