scottish lurcher 185
i keep my dogs in a wooden shed with a run at moment but will be moving soon to a house which has some stone outbuildings at the moment i use no heating but was talking to guy who keeps his in some and reckons you need to use heating these outbuilds have stone floors and walls . i will be making some rasied beds for the dogs to keep them off cold floor cover with straw which i thought would be nice and warm but he says he uses the same system and needs to use heating as well cos these stone builds get so cold at night. do any of you guys keep your dogs in these and do you use heating? the dogs that i will be keep in these stone outbuilds are cross saluki greyhound lurchers so they dont have the thickess of coats Quote Link to post
dodger 2,765
Could you not put the excisting kennels inside the out building then they should have the best of both worlds. Quote Link to post
tote 856
How about putting a kennel coat on them,as a few of the greyhound lads do. Quote Link to post
Guest lamper/gatherer
i keep my dog in my old pig pen, which is concrete,it gets that cold in winter the water freezes in dish,i bought a tube heater, the kind that people use in greenhouses, very cheap to run too about 3p per night..also made raised bed,but lined walls surrounding bed with old sofa cushiuns. Guest Buck
awryt ther, a keep my lurchers in concrete out buildings, and all tht i do is make sure they hav plenty of straw on the ground for bedding, and during very cold wether, they get warm feeds with corn oil added for extra fat/heat. they do fine an seem to b happy. lurchers are harder thn most folk think Quote Link to post
Guest baldie
My dogs are kennelled in the day, the porch at night. In cold weather, i have a heat lamp on in the kennel, and bugger the cost. My dogs are warm and comfortable. It will save money in vets bills in old age i think. Quote Link to post
Hob&Jill 258
Dont be silly, all you need is one of these Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Hot air rises upwards: so putting a bed or box with a roof, in your building (as already suggested) will keep the dog a lot warmer than if all the heat from its body is just escaping into a larger area (like a stone building). When my dogs were in a big shed they had boxes full of straw to sleep in: they were as warm as toast. I even insulated the boxes further by putting a layer of foam on the roof then another layer of ply. Edited March 14, 2007 by skycat Quote Link to post

LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT TUBE HEATER THING CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT. SOUNDS NICE AND CHEAP you could wire it up to a thermostat that way you could control it when temp drops to what you want heater will come on then go off by it self they only cost abt 16 quid for thermostat those heaters are about 30 quid 100kw heater cost abt 36 pence for 24hours running acording to one supplier i was talking to Quote Link to post
Guest alastair
a dog may be ok without heating, but what about when its been run all night and soaking wet,i heat mine on very cold nights with a heat lamp, and a sheet of kingspan under him,and coats, covers etc,if folk are worried about a few quid on heating, how they going to fare on the other well expensive things. brock 11
i hate nothing more than macho dog men who say dogs are dogs they will be o.k yeah they wont die,but theres nothing worse than watching a dog stiff as a board come out of his freezing kennel early to start a days hunting or coursing, look after them and they will look after you,i put a kennel coat and a blizzard coat on my dogs in the cold, then if it gets really cold i lock them in before i go to bed and its very cosy and warm for them Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
The other point to remember is that if the dog has to use up a lot of energy trying to keep warm in a cold kennel, then its going to need far more food just to maintain itself: I noticed how much less my dogs needed to eat once they had covered deep straw boxes in really cold weather.
