how old do u start taking a pup out

Recommended Posts

if your dogs 4 months now i wouldnt even dream of takeing it out lamping till next season it would be 16 months old and the perfect age 2 start let the dog be a pup ffs.there was never a dog ruined from being held back but plenty ruined from starting 2 young.

i disagree with that statement mate, theres been more than enough dogs ruined that have been started from the age of 9 months onwards. its easy to ruin any dog if you dont work them sensible dont matter what age.

my 7 1/2 mnth old pup lightly made and looking well running and playing has had lots of daytime mooching type walks and been in at the kill with a few bunnies is still way off lamping . for me its as much about the pups retrieve, recall, obedience etc, your not doing anyone any favours taking a pup out and having to chase it round a field cos it wont do what its supposed to. let the pup be a pup, make sure the basics are 100%, good with stock etc and if it takes a month or two longer look on it as a month or two better. its much easier to instill good habits in a pup than it is to cure bad ones in a grown dog

hi how old do u start taking a pup out on the lamp

i started bringing my pup out at 4 months getting her use to getting over walls threw gates watching the older dogs work within a month i had her looking down the beem i started by dropping a dead rabbit behind me turning around and slipping her about 20 feet from it it gave her grate confidence and when she turned 6 months i slipped her in a easy rabbit and to my delight she caught it

All depends on the pup but it doesn't do any harm to take them out JUST TO WATCH from 4/5 months onwards.

They get a bit of insight into the lamp, moving around in darkness, maybe get a nose at a fresh kill. etc etc etc.

HTH.

i think taking them out 2 early just 2 watch if you not going slip it will frustraite a dog and somtimes can make a dog yapp on ,seen it louds of times

Know what your saying Rocky but if thats thecase and if they yap, you can leave them at home! If they don't it's all good experience for them. I took mine at 5 months and let her get used to the "proceedings" and let her have her first run on a squatter at 6 1/2 months (which she caught :toast: ) and have gradually built up her slips as she has grown and fittened up.

12 months old yesterday and she's had 81 rabs so far and I don't think I've overworked or overmatched her but again as above, it all depends on the dog and your own experience (which is why the lad sensibly asked the question in the first place.)

Cheers, D.
