ferret rescue prices

We used to co-run a ferret rescue, but our friends now run it although we still help with fundraising etc.

Food , bedding, hutches etc etc we paid out of our own pockets. At one point i remember us paying upto £60 a week.

With 120 ferrets between us, at one time it was not cheap .

Its £25 for a neutered ferret which is only a percentage of what the vet charges the rescue.

There is no objection to working homes as long as its a good home. Some of the best workers we have had have been rescue ferrets, as we also work ferrets.

Paying £25 for an animal that you may have for 10 years is not a lot to pay i don't think.

i spoke to somebody that ran a ferret rescue ( no names etc) and asked how much it costs to rehome a rescue ferret. they said that for single ferrets they ask for a minimum of 20pound donation. i was took back at the high cost. 20 quid for a rescue ferret? my lab x only cost a few quid more. i asked why is was so much and they said that the cost of a shed, food, vets bills hutches, runs and care soon adds up.

now while i do understand the amount of money involved surely if they lowered the cost of rehoming then they would get more 'customers' and rehome more ferrets. why would somebody pay 20+ pound to rehome a ferret when they go for free or a small working mans price on somewhere like here. the rspca charges a fiver which i think is a fair price.

no wonder the rescues are full when they are asking for you to take out a mini mortgage :whistling: to rescue a ferret.

I can see where your coming from being a DAFT newbie but once you've been in the game a wee while you can usually get good working ferrets for free . I'm wary of rescues unless there kits as i believe that older ferrets are there for a reason and i usually avoid these places like the plague

Putting a good value on a trusty tool, your not far off the mark there gin. Problem is there are far too many ferrets around and to a lot of folk hold no financial value. "its just a ferret!"

"£25 for a ferret! my mate can get me another 5 for that price!"

If they dont make the initial grade they are easy to discard and end up with the likes of the rescues, pretty much similar to the lurcher rescues.

I do think some of the prices from rescue centres are a little outrageous, certainly those quoted on here. Around my way the average donation is £15 per ferret and i have seen some belters come from rescue centres.

Three of the best working ferrets i have known, were given to the rescue as being useless workers,- but on taking them out to try them ourselves, they soon took to the job, and i just think its the owners that are the problem most of the time.

A lot of rescue ferrets are lost workers anyway, we tend to find.

£50 near me was thinking of a neutred hob,i happen to vaguely know one of the volunteers there who mentioned that i work mine ,i was then told i couldnt have 1 at any price due to this!!!!!

Freshfields near us were the same, all I was trying to do was rehome some ferrets !! Thats why I'll never bother with rescues again
