baxter25 0
Hi, Im new to the site and and new to shooting but have been bitten by the bug! After trying a few types of gun I have decided to start with a gas ram. Can anyone advise which is the best and also a decent scope. Thanks Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
The drop in ones like for bsa lightning ect are good only for a short time .So no good .Theoben seem like a nightmare to get parts to repair your gun.Your gun has to go back to them for repair a big expence. So your left with the HW 90 .I havent shot one ,but if I was getting a gas ram that is what I would get .I think theoben has some input into the hw 90, but parts for the gun are avalible from chambers,I think. andyfr1968 772
Good advice above Theoben make some beautifully made and lovely looking rifles but they don't shoot as well as they look. They've a very sharp recoil that does scopes no good at all in the long term, they are relatively hard to cock and the triggers are nowhere near as good as they should be for the price. I've used an HW90 for the past 15 years and I can't recomend them highly enough. First class build and trigger, fairly gentle recoil and all the good stuff that comes with using Theoben's gas ram. Welcome to the forum Cheers. Quote Link to post

baxter25 0
Nice one, Thats what ill get then. On another note I have seen on some sites that you can get self loading rifles. Are these availble as gas rams and how do they work, do you still need to cock them before every shot? Cheers Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
Theoben make a gasram under lever with a magazine. You have to cock the gun for each shot .I do wonder how this system stop you dry fireing your gun when the mag is empty. To load a pellet one at a time is not to hard ,I have guns with and without mags ,mags are not that good .Some times you forget to look if they are empty ,[you shoot a blast of air at rabbit] ,on my hw 100 if you forget to engage the mag you shoot one shot ,shot 2 is a puff of air .[you shoot a blast of air at rabbit.].The theoben mags damage the skirts on soft pellets .desroying accuracy .[you may as well shoot a puff of air at rabbit]These are problems I havent had with single shot, pcp ,breakbarrel .or under lever. pianoman 3,587
If a Gas Ram it's to be; get the HW90. Best trigger, superbly accurate, easy to live with and service. Andy's is .20 calibre and H&N TROPHY seems a cracking pellet in this calibre. I've witnessed him shoot fantastic long range targets very precise and accurately with his. Don't bother with Theobens they are not the deal they look and will probably smash your scope up with their sharp-snap recoil characteristics. If you want something special, commission a stock in walnut from Custom Stock of Sheffield. They make the stocks for a lot of Theobens anyway! Quote Link to post
baxter25 0
Thanks for the advice and warm welcome guys. i havnt seen a bad review yet so ill e buying one on saturday, thinking of spending a bit more and going for the carbine. I am tempted by the custom stock too, my first thoughts were that the standard stock was a bit plain. Cheers Quote Link to post

baxter25 0
One last thing, do i need to pump air into the gas cylinder? I have seen pumps advertised on some websites. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
No you should not need to pump the cylinder, do you every pump up the gas springs on a car (those of you with hydrolastic suspension shurrup)? They are a sealed unit! Quote Link to post
