foxwarren russels

Recommended Posts

Sunday for the first time I saw a chapman breed russell,I was uninpressed. It was small and thin, his chest was definitely small, small head and it looked really weak.An old hunter that was with me said "Is not the same breed as leo(his dog r.i.p) and your dog?" when I answered "yes it is" he looked at me as I was joking.I haven't seen the dog work but it seem to me not enough strong for the job.I like small dogs but with some bones and a good head.

Is all the line of this type?how they work?

there is no type to these russells, ive been to e.c kennels and they are all of different types to say the least, they are bred for showing now,but a mate of mine was told that they are all guaranteed to work :hmm::hmm: ,i saw a few a while back and they were the smallest dogs i have ever seen, they would walk through a rabbit earth no problem, and thats not exagerating, they would never hold a charlie in one place.

Lets not forget lads that Eddie Chapman holds, or held onto the ideal, that a Russel was meant to bay at and if possible bolt its fox. He also wanted a terrier that could reach its fox and if breeding small/ tiny under 12" terriers he could do it then thats what he did.

I don't know if there is a typical " Chapman " stamp as you can see in Nuttal or Parkes's for example but the bloke must have bred hundreds of liteters in his time and there must be all different shapes and sizes. He would need allsorts for his hunt terrier work surely.

Size, like i tell the wife, isn't everything, its not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. I've a 12" puny jaw'd terrier that has never come away from a fox in 7 seasons.

As a general rule, I think you cannot judge a Kennel by one dog, you cannot judge a dog by its Kennel prefix, and you can never judge a working dog by looks alone. The finest working dog I ever knew never looked like much, but it was a true wonder in the field, while I have seem some beautiful dogs that did not work and were too stupid to avoid a major beating.

My understanding is that Eddie now keeps two lines of Russells -- the larger dogs for show, and the smaller ones for work, which is why you can find Foxwarren dogs of quite divergent sizes. It does not take much size on a dog to get a fox to bolt, and a good bayer can generally push a fox to a stop end if given a bit of time to do the job. It's more common for a dog to be too big for the job than too small. I have had dogs of all sizes and I have never wished for a larger dog, but I have often wished for a smaller one.

As to the notion that every dog from any kennel works out all the time, that is nonsense. That said, experience in the field determines outcomes more often than not, and this is a factor that is greatly undervalued. The folks that kennel their dogs all year long and expect them to be world-beaters the one time a year that they taken them out are a true mystery to me. My advice is always to get as good a dog as you can from working lines and then get it out in the field a lot and go slow and give the dog time. If you do that, things generally work out.
