Cider press and home made scratter

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got any plans to make a cider press and scratter?

I have looked and not seen a decent plan on the net, and now it is coming up to the cider making season, me being me I leave things till last minute and now I am in a mad rush to make a couple. My friend who I borrowed has sort of disapeared to Wales.... so thats no help so thought of making my own.

Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated.

Hello Joe

Here is a link for plans for cider presses' depending on how much you are going to make i would recomend the pulp master about £20 from most brew shops and i picked up a vigo press off flea bay for £100 be warned though the more you make its bloody hard work' though worth it in the end :drinks: good luck....

  • 2 weeks later...

built this last year from 3x3 and 3x2 green oak very simple to do ! i freeze the apples first then use a piece of 3x3 oak with a handle through the top to crush the apples (no need for a scratter for the amount i done 20 gall ,took about 2 1/2 hours all in ) i used a 2 ton bottle jack 1 all in it cost just under £70 with the muslin for the cheeses

yes but only what ive sketched out and it would probably only confuse the issue as i altered it during construction !( i know what the sketches mean but no one else would :hmm: ) i originally was going to use 4x2 and 3/4" ply for the cheeses but scaled it down ,its still well capable of doing what i want .

It would be clearer if i took a couple of pics of it in seperate bits tomorrow , it basically comes into 2 main pieces for storage ,main frame and base ! and a handful of cheeses and a former , weather permitting i will take pics in morning

here you go hope it helps !

as i said all built with green oak

UPRIGHT IS 36"HIGH X 32" WIDE (UPRIGHTS ARE 3X3 AND CROSS PIECES ARE 3X2 ) BOLTED THROUGH WITH COACH BOLTS AND JUST RESTS ON TOP OF BASE WHEN IN USE

101_0027.jpg

BASE IS BUILT WITH 3X2 AND FIXED WITH COACH SCREWS

tray is made of 3/4"ply and glued and srewd then varnished and made to fit base !

101_0029.jpg

former is just 9mm ply 3" deep glued screwed and varnished

and cheeses are 9mm ply with 9mm ply rails glued on and varnished

as i said i just freeze the apples then crush in a strong plastic bucket with a 3x3 oak post with a rod through it i get over 70% yield of juice doing this with a 2 ton jack , so don't feel the need for a scratter !

BASE IS 24" X 28" FIXED WITH COACH SCREWS

101_0029.jpg

TRAY IS 3/4" PLY GLUED AND SCREWED THEN VARNISHED

101_0030.jpg

FORMER IS 9MM PLY AS ARE CHEESES ALL GLUED AND SCREWED THEN VARNISHED

As i said i freeze the apples them pulp with a 3x3 oak post in a plastic bucket and get 70% yield with a 2 ton jack so cant see the need for a scratter at the moment
