taff1969 1
just started my 13 month old whippet bitch couple months ago, she already had a few daytime rabbits but seems to be lacking a good strike on the lamp, is this down to inexperience? Quote Link to post

bird 9,897
just started my 13 month old whippet bitch couple months ago, she already had a few daytime rabbits but seems to be lacking a good strike on the lamp, is this down to inexperience? as you said (just) started the young dog, so its got to learn to strike, give it bit longer . But with whippets more so than most running dogs, they should be more natural with they strike. I had none ped whippet bitch 20in 20lb, and she was brill at catching great strike, and most i seen from the litter were very good. My bitch got the knack picking up rabbits after 1/2 dozen nights in the lamp. Give it month or so, then if still not striking might have to go for a pet home,.! Quote Link to post
carp man 1 219
time will tell mate just go steady with her Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
f**k me, pessimistic! The lad has just started her on the lamp, she's taking rabbits daytime and your saying, if she doesn't start bagging them in the next couple of trips, stick her in a pet home! Bit extreme that. She can obviously take them, just needs more practice and experiance, she's 13 month ffs. Maybe try with a rabbit skin dummy on a rope, swinging it about, get her to practice her strike etc. Don't just give up on the dog and move on. 2 Quote Link to post

All dogs learn at differnt rates any x or breeds, but as i said a whippet should have natural abilty+agilty, than any dog for picking up rabbits and its one breed i think that should show quicker abilty at this job. Yes give it time but if they whippets carnt pick a rabbit up in the lamp,( its caught in the day thats harder, the lamp is alot eaiser) well nothing will. Quote Link to post

fcuktheban 140
My bitch wouldn't even catch a ball in her mouth until she was 11 months old she usually brings rabbits back live to hand now. I'm sure with time and practice the pup will get there. As long as she wants to catch them she will figure it out. Quote Link to post
