what part of lurcherwork appeals to you most?

Recommended Posts

Was just wondering what draws different people to lurchers and what the do they get from working there dogs. For me its being out with mates enjoying good craic and watching good runs and comparing each others dogs. Obviously i love watching the dog catch but the run to me is more important.

This is a good question.

I like the dogs in general for their temperaments, their looks, their history and their natural skill to hunt. What other type of dog can bring so much food to the table, and what other type of dog can sneakily rob food from cubboards and tables will panache!

Then comes the meeting of others with the same types of dogs and working them together seeing different styles of stealth and running from each dog.

And lastly to see how crap some people are at trying to keep the beam fixed firmly on the prey.....

to me It doesn't matter if my dogs bring 30-40 rabbits home a night I am happy with 10-15 rabbits I like to see my dog do what it was bred and trained to do and having a companion that's always by my side just makes me happy

quite the opposite for me in some respects as i mainly lamp alone but from the few i have seen over the years my dogs are more than up to scratch so never been to worried on comparisons, certainly good enough for me anyway,i work long hours so lamping suits my life style.

so i suppose its just the getting out there and doing it,not interested in numbers aint got the land to worry about it anyway so just getting a few runs is all im wanting to see the dog work, dont have to rely on anyone and free to come and go as i please also love the feeling of being out on the shittiest nights when are non hunting companions would not dream of setting foot outside the house, sure we have all had that "your f*****g mad " look from our other halves, and with nothing more than the dog for company you just got to love it

there are two things i love to see out hunting that draws me to lurcher work, one being out in the day watching the dog getting a scent trailing it up body tensed tail up getting more and more excited as the scent gets stronger expecting a bolt at any second and out lamping watching the dog twisting and turning all over a good rabbit but the rabbit just cant shake him off and then a good strike

As said above, watching the dog learn all the time, but most of it come's from being out there, I mainly lamp on my own, but do lamp with a lad off here and a mate up the road from me when he cba to come out, but i think the best time's i've had is when it's just me and the bitch! love them dark cold windy nights,

last night has got to be one of the best nights i've had, even tho she missed it, it was one hell of a course the both ran!

as some of you may know i took a risk with this bitch i got, as i never got her from the breeder, but she was only 12/13 weeks when i got her, she was a little mut full of worms, mange, and you could not even touch her with out the risk of getting a bite from her!

well all i can say is what a total change in this bitch she's now just under 19 month! and has dropped bunnys like nowt and other things!

I am real happy with her to date!

i suppose lamping really, get the buzz when the dog is on the back of somthing. Like mooching thats great as my 2 dogs have great noses, and the 1 will knock stuff out for the other 1 , dont catch much in the day but still good sport. Like lamping with mates, and seeing there dogs run.

What appeals to me most about lurcherwork would be getting out seeing the counrtyside around you, Thoose long winter nights with nothing but lamp dog and a good old flask of coffee, Watching your dog progress through out the season.Nothiung can compare with that

all the very best for the season lads

what keeps me going out lamping is me and my dogs wits against the quarry and the fact that no two nights or runs are the same love the thrill of the chase its not the amount of gear in the bag at end of the night but the quality time spent out with dogs on own or with couple of good mates

theres many aspects of lurchers i love cant put a favourite one of them is getting a dog fit and in condition and watching as daily it all comes together. and i really love watching a running dog of any breed run whether its in play or at work something magical about them when their flat out . but i suppose at this time in my life my biggest buzz is watching them behind a good strong winter longears giving it some stick if i am honest . especially if its a pup i have bred or reared from a baby .
