Ryan What type of shooting do you intend doing. For rough shooting the springer or cocker are hard to beat,i also use a lab for shooting but in saying that not all labs will take to beating cover, but are easier to handle than the spaniels.I use the springers on a driven shoot aswell as for my own use and you have to be on top of them the whole time when there's plenty of game about, but if you have the patience to train them there a great little gun dog. Born Hunter 17,816
Theres an old saying "labs are born half trained, springers die half trained and cockers are just cockers". Theres truth in it but I would say the more important question is 'what do you want the dog for exactly?'. Just because springers are more headstrong than a lab dont be put off if its the right dog for the job. Get shit loads of advice and guidance from decent spaniel men if you feel a bit out of youre depth. Quote Link to post

ftm 3,357
i had never used a gun dog before as i always had lurchers terriers etc i was given a cocker pup and although i found it a bit trying at times i loved watching the cocker work i wouldnt go as far as saying there really hard to train mind you as my little bitch was quite easy .so if you know the basics im sure your keeper friend will guide you through the most important aspects good luck mate Quote Link to post

stroller 341
i think keepers often dont have the best dogs or the best advice.if you can ask them for work as a beater you will see all sorts of dog in the line and picking up ask their handlers about their dogs and watch them work, see what style will suit you. 1 Quote Link to post
Dave C 63
If you want a Springer get a Springer mate, you will always be happiest with the breed you like the best and what ever your sport you wont go far wrong with a spaniel. I wouldnt say a springer was the worst to train by a long way and as long as you dont rush things too much you will be fine. But the easiest to train is defenetly a Lab from good working stock, but you still have to put the time in to do the dog justice. ATB Dave. Quote Link to post
paulf2461 0
dont overlook a gsp they will do it all can be head strong and keepers dont like them very much but a really great dog . hard working when hunting good in cover not a spaniel but trust his judgement wont go in, probably nothing there . great for picking up ,cover lots of ground quickly and effectivly. all round great dogs on my second now wouldn't have anything else . I dont doubt anything you have said Paul, as i have had GWP and they are cracking dogs (great all rounders when mature) But the question is what is the easiest to train, i any one who has owned a German Pointer knows there is no way they are easier than a Lab to train. I am not saying that Labs are any better dogs before anyone starts, as i think very highly of the German Pointers both Wire and smooth, but the Labs are definitely easier to train. ATB Dave.
