N. Ireland mate between beating with hounds and lamping most nights of the week they can fairly get the numbers.

like i said lamping wasnt invented in them days there must have been a lot more foxs in them days an yes a know theres lots of foxs in northern ireland an i wouldnt dispute large bags over there

Its a shame more wasnt said on what the man liked in terms of a working terrier. I should think his idea of the perfect terrier would go against the trend of todays terrierman, but thats just speculation.

And bear in mind folks that this mans job was to control foxes and badgers, he wasnt a sunday morning digger like most. So knowing the landowners and his ground getting a fox or badger for every day of the year isnt too extreme.

One of them old timers that you would love to meet by the fire of a quiet country pub for a chat and a bit of wisdom.

in recent years i have lamped round deryshire an yet to find a place that can produce that many fox now if he said badgers then that would be diffrent cause there literally hundreds but in these times i dont think theres as many foxs as there used to be in them days gone by...........

Simple answer OT,is the lamp and rifle, these lads were digging well before the gun nuts lit it up like Blackpool.

We never did anywhere near those numbers up there[80's/90's] but i cant remember blanking, did all our land in a rota so werent up there every week,a mate told me about a farmer he knows [lives near Ibel] who's shot "thousands" of foxes over the last 30 years, thats got to make a big difference.

We gave all the land up eventually because of the badgers, just not worth the hassle.

thats over 6 foxs a week every week for over ten year sounds a bit far fetched to me

Why is it? We've had 3 in a day before and I'd bet many more lads on here have had more than that. Fair enough it didn't and won't happen every week and I bet the fella was out more than I get out, so I don't think it sounds so far fetched.

penis did you read my posts ?? look pal my mate has permish less than 5 mile away from were that bloke was from im telling you that area just does not ile say it again so i can get it through to you does not produce that amount of foxs today an you would be lucky to get 50 a year an you certainly would struggle the year after i didnt say it werent possible i said its not possible in them areas today read my posts before you comment an if you dont beleive what i say pm me ile take you up there show you...like steve said the rifle boys have sorted any fox populations out ......the bloke had to get just about 1 fox a day every day an fair enough some days he may have took 5 an 6 but to do all them fox with just terriers?? and have any of yous been in that area ?? some very bad spots for terriers beleive me... an only certain times of year there will be more than a few to ground namely breeding season.. im not saying he didnt do it just saying it would be impossible today and the ground is tough land to work i certainly couldnt do that kind of amount even if the foxs were there its like the fells some of that land ....

We took quite a few on our low ground permission lincs/notts ect, perfect for it really, bolted by terriers and taken by the lurchers, very good sport and ive got some good memories from back then, the land covered in this article is a nightmare for lurchers, the best fox dog we ever had ended up killing himself by going over a small rock face and breaking his neck, this dog took a lot of fox and was very experianced but the land got him, some places up there could be lamped but good local knowledge would be a must,it changes so quickly from flat to sheer drop! My mates lost 2 lurchers up there, both broken necks.

Ive got some belting vids of the daytime terrier/lurcher combination in action,i would post but my mugs all over them, and i dont think thats a good idea somehow.
