Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Day out sunday on an estate nearby .We get the invite after every pheasant season but not during .Tried several places along a bank by the keepers house with no mark until we came to a largish place where my terrier wanted in .Netted up ,entered the bitch and stood with a shotgun apiece in case this was linked to any other workings nearby .Neednt have bothered as the bitch took the fox to a stop end and after locating her we dug the fox at nearly 8 foot after just under 3 hours through sand and 3 layers of unforgiving rock . It was a mangey tailed vixen thought to be barren .Backfilled here and moved on to the opposite hanging wood.Left the dogs in the boxes while we had a look around for signs of use as there are many holes here containing a variety of stuff .Found a 3 eyed place with the faintest of pad marks and flattened bluebell shoots .Got the other bitch ,a superb fox dog ,and tried her on the lead for a mark .The tail quivere which was enough .In she flew baying immediately and came to rest 5 yds from where she entered .The mark said 3 foot but moving aso we let her get right up to it before hoofing out the sand .Only got 2 foot in when the soil collapsed under our weight into a large cavern and left us looking at the fox covered in soil!.Luckily the bitch scrambled free, held the fox which was restrained long enough for a shot with .410 for a humane dispatch .Nice .Never know whats in the ground ?.A dog fox in good nick . The little bitch in the pic above lost the sight in one eye ratting last year .Pic shows the cavern into which we fell ? Tried further afield but nothing else found today.Good day had by all . The last pic shows the mangey tailed vic and the dog on the keepers lawn . Quote Link to post
