heating for kennels.

Recommended Posts

Its getting to the time of year to start thinking about winter. This year ive converted my stables to kennels and runs so was wondering what sort of heating if any people use. I have infra red heat that we have used for the pups if its been cold. The old stables are pretty sheltered. So yea just wondering whether people bother or not and if you do what type you use and how cost effective they are as I am doing 5 or 6 kennels. Thanks.

I would always put closed in boxes in large sheds: that way the heat from the dog's body isn't escaping into a large area with a high ceiling: box filled with straw and a pop hole: helps keep the dogs warmer and away from draughts. Dogs can waste a lot of energy trying to keep warm in big open spaces.

My Dogs boxes are 3 and a half foot long, 2 foot wide and 2 and a half foot deep, but that's housed inside a bigger brick shed, with 6 foot runs coming from that. When winter comes I just chuck in a load of bedding (Rugs and blankets), and they're fine. You'll be surprised how warm they stay, Their bedding is always toasty warm when they get up out their beds.

If they've been worked hard and need to heal or it really is freezing cold, and they're in kennels, then stick a coat on them if you're really worried, they'll be sound :good: .

I like the box within the box type, Aslong as its draught free with decent bit of bedding i always hang a bit of carpet off the entrance of the box too, And that works for me as when theres even a decent frost on the ground if i stick my arm in the box you can actaul feel the warmth compared too outside so dogs happy...
