sallie 67
Its getting to the time of year to start thinking about winter. This year ive converted my stables to kennels and runs so was wondering what sort of heating if any people use. I have infra red heat that we have used for the pups if its been cold. The old stables are pretty sheltered. So yea just wondering whether people bother or not and if you do what type you use and how cost effective they are as I am doing 5 or 6 kennels. Thanks. skycat 6,173
I would always put closed in boxes in large sheds: that way the heat from the dog's body isn't escaping into a large area with a high ceiling: box filled with straw and a pop hole: helps keep the dogs warmer and away from draughts. Dogs can waste a lot of energy trying to keep warm in big open spaces. Quote Link to post
Mooching Celt 659
Mine are under 150w dull emitter bulbs when it's cold and also after a hard nights graft, think it helps them recover quicker aswell. Last winter it reached -18c round here and was suprised at the way the dogs all kept good condition with very little increase in food. Quote Link to post

not amused 4
if sheltered and not to spacious ,body heat of 5 or 6 dogs should keep the kennels sufficiently warm, works for me . Quote Link to post
dixiebop 125
Line the boxes with "Kingspan"proper luxury,B & Q do the wee plastic bar Heaters ,look like downpiping,Just enough heat to stop a Freeze, you used to get them in site huts, cheap to run . Quote Link to post
Attack Fell Terrier 864
My Dogs boxes are 3 and a half foot long, 2 foot wide and 2 and a half foot deep, but that's housed inside a bigger brick shed, with 6 foot runs coming from that. When winter comes I just chuck in a load of bedding (Rugs and blankets), and they're fine. You'll be surprised how warm they stay, Their bedding is always toasty warm when they get up out their beds. If they've been worked hard and need to heal or it really is freezing cold, and they're in kennels, then stick a coat on them if you're really worried, they'll be sound . Quote Link to post
black-spring 18
when my dogs were outside over night, i boxed in a green house tube heater into the rear of their box. this just keeps the chill off. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Green-Electric-Tubular-Greenhouse-Heater-2-4-/160527781494?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Structures_Fencing_CV&var=&hash=item6b1b1490fc Quote Link to post

Tiny 7 1,694
I like the box within the box type, Aslong as its draught free with decent bit of bedding i always hang a bit of carpet off the entrance of the box too, And that works for me as when theres even a decent frost on the ground if i stick my arm in the box you can actaul feel the warmth compared too outside so dogs happy...
