Another Big Cat

Recommended Posts

Yes mate, there are some cracking fish in that river, and it was a dream of mine to go and fish it a few years back. But ive heard some horror stories from people that have been out there. Apparently there are hundreds of guides there now, all claiming that a particular stretch is "theirs" because they go out in a boat every afternoon tipping in sackfuls of halibut pellet, and it kicks off if you decide to fish any where near one of these areas. The cats have turned into halibut hoovers and wont take a livebait or deadbait, which in turn has put off most of the purist "predator" fisherman. I'm not slagging anyone off for going, just personally its not for me. I think i would rather go to France or the Po in Italy, and i would consider it a better achievment taking a big cat from one of the lesser known waters. ATB. Neil.

The anti-fishing lobby are already registering their disgust in the comments section at the bottom. It really does confuse me why they waist their useless breath complaining and campainging about the capture and release of a fish when there's much worse happening in the uk, halal slaughter for example. Anyway, nice fish and it must take way more than the standard 2 3/4 lb test curve rods that i use for my carp fishing in the uk.

Didnt want to come across as some sort of snob, just trying to pass on what ive heard, have heard it described as a circus out there now. It is a shame mate, what a holiday that could be, laying in the sun with a few beers and the chance of a fish like that.

Yes mate, my pride and joy that fish, spent a year unemployed and had three fifties two sixties and that 76lb fish from a lake in Essex. They were English fish, the biggest went in a few years earlier at 20lb so i was told. Came out the following year at over 80lb. Would love to go back but i have to go to work now and they decided to split the lake into two and it ruined it

The Ebro is getting just like an overfished commercial UK carp lake on some sections, everyones fishing it with Halibut pellets,I am in spain at the moment, dont know how long for,a week,a month or till december, plans are fluid, but I spoke to an english guy who caught a 120kg siamese catfish on the mekong,he said that was the mother of all fights,I have had them up to 70+ Lbs,and hope to be back in Thailand at the end of the year, anyone gets the chance its a far,far better freshwater fishing venue than Spain is.

Check out the bottom line of that newspaper article,it tells of the world angling record catfish at over 600 Lbs,thats a siamese catfish I think,my arm and pec cramped up after my first days fishing in Thailand for cats,I was getting 20,30,40 Lbers a cast.

my mate had a good few days fishing out there mackem(thailand),, he showed me all the pics,, some big feck of fish,,, but i couldnt help thinking it was all "canned",, the guide did evrything,, the only bit he did was reel it in.

Your mate probably fished somewhere like Bungsam lan TOMO,loads of places most westerners dont get to see never mind fish,if he had went to some of the mekong backwaters etc its unspoilt,he should have just done what I did, take his own rods and kit and headed off away from the commercial fisheries.

Excuse me Neil but wouldn't your pride and joy be a bollie belly pellet snuffler? A fish doesn't get that big on fish alone. I would defo go to Spain fishing if I had the time, big Cats and Carp, pellet snufflers or not.

Still I consider the European Catfish one of the ugliest fish in the world

 Yes mate, i know your right and yes i have caught them on pellets myself tbh. They are scavengers as well as predators by nature, but i have always considered myself as a predator angler, and i prefer to catch them using live or deadbaits. Its just that ive heard people saying that they will now only take pellets out there, and that dont seem right some how. I think fair play to the lads that go off on their own and find their own fish. Thats what i would do if i ever went there. I personally think thats more of an achievement than letting a guide tow out your baits on a boat and dropping it on a carpet of pellets that he baited up earlier. Maybe i'm just jeleous that they have caught bigger fish than me :D
