Did you not try and dig the dog out on xmas day,why wait until boxing day, have you not 2 hands of your own,if you are not fit to dig it you should not have put the dog to ground in the 1st place, not h

Had a russell bitch working a fox in a drain "TWICE" for three and two days respectively, the first drain i dug three different holes to find the bitch guessing the run of the pipe by torch light. When i finaly got somewhere close to her i could see that she was lying next to her fox but had nothing left in her pot to push it or work it, she couldn't even bay anymore, she had gone completely horse and had hardley any voice left. Admittedly i was young and foolish and the bitch had no collar on, she wasn't the sort to push the fox hard or to bully it, but at that time of my career she was the perfect dog for me. A lad came forward with a ROCK HARD lakey which i was told would kill the fox no problem, the lakey was entered by torch light and we watched it move forward, as soon as he was upto my bitch she backed out and came to my call. The rock hard lakey was silent and as we listened intently to the top of the dig no sound could be heard, the chap who's dog it was had his chest well and truly stuck out and he was utterly convinced his terrier was going about the business of killing the fox. After a few minutes of listening we leant forward back into the pipe, he shouted once and switched on his torch only for the lakey to stck it's head out and lick his face there and then lol. His super hard dog had backed out at the same time as my bitch and had just sat around the corner all that time, only coming out when he leant back in to shout him, needless it was a quiet drive home. The bitch had stuck to her job for three days so i had no hard feelings about her, she only came out when another dog climbed over her, something she wasn't used to. The next time i was walking a golf course and the bitch found her own entertainment and dropped toground under a green, to cut it short she was in for two days and to save my face and the prosecutions i had to phone the fire brigade as i thought digging up the number seven green wouldn't go down to well.

We had a red Lakeland bitch stuck to ground in a rock pile on the side of Snowdon for 30 hours. In the end we had to call out the Snowdon Mountain Rescue, man they are the BOYS. They worked in silence, they knew exactly what to do. The bitch had got up on a ledge and could not get back down. On the plus side she did bolt three red uns.

10 years or so ago i had a bitch to ground in a spot in a nature reserve local to me which was right on the footpath for 7 days, she had a collar on,albeit an old deben collar, couldnt get a mark anywhere for the bitch all that 1st day,no noise,id bolted lots of foxes here over my younger years before i had legitamate places to dig,id never had to dig this place ,but it never looked a bad spot tbh,on the side of a small stream

couldnt get the terrier rescue in as at that time wouldnt accept me as a member,so got my partner to contact RSPCA sayin it was her dog and lost it while walking the public footpath . RSPCA in fact f****d up and couldnt get anyone to out assess the place for a few days,so told my partner i could try and retrieve the dog,i got a few mates together and went there and proceeded to dig,as i couldnt get a mark we just sank 2 huge holes in the centre of the earth hoping to hit a tube, dug 12 ft in 2 places and never hit a tube the ground was real bad too clay and shingle,on the 2nd day whilst we were digging the national trust warden attended along with 4 police officers, told us to stop what we were doing and we were to be arrested for interfering with a badger sette, too which i replied i was told by an rspca officer i could attempt to retrieve the dog,i rattled off times, names and the rspca officers number ect, police confered amongst themselves and then checked with the control room at local station who contacted the rspcas office and officer who id had bn given the green light from, they then told me to have a good day and good luck retrieving my dog,the national trust warden was foaming and ranting and raving this spot held badgers ect ect (tosser).

so after 3 days entered another dog owned by a friend with a collar on,she was only a rabbitting bitch and i had no faith in her finding mine, she seemed to go to one spot at 14 ft and under some real big trees and crazy roots, and then come away, she did this a few times,so i thought it was my last hope to open up here hoping to hear my bitch,on the 4th 5th and 6th day no one was able to help me dig due to work ect ect,so i plodded on myself, the ground was like concrete and real hard going and when digging alone it soon tired you out and seemed to be getting nowhere fast and motivation was an issue knowing that the dog may not even be there, over the course of the week while id been there there was a fella used to walk his lab along this footbath down the wood and then back the same way he gone and each day would ask if id had any joy,to which my reply was no,he was a nice fella and took my number and said if he came across the dog if she got herself out,he'd pick her up and ring me,i got home on the 6th day and had a long hard think, and thought to myself the bitch was no longer alive after 6 days,so i decided that next day the 7th would be my last day digging then id backfill my craters and backfill the holes to this earth/sette in and be done with it.

so i got there that next morning bright and early and slogged my guts out and was near enough the depth of the 14ft the old knocker box had given days before ,this fella id met once again came along this path, asked his usual any joy, again my answer was no mate, but explained this was my last day there but it had been a pleasure to have met him, albeit under different circumstances,so off he trundled down this footpath on his usual way,so i got back to digging (well more like scratching about,as i was right sick, thinkin my bitch was gone),when all of a sudden i heard a noise, undergrowth rustling an a branch snap, and then a fox bolt from one of the holes to this earth/sette,i couldnt believe what id just seen, and then within 5 minutes out follows my bitch, none the worse for ware i might add,i couldnt grab her fast enough and get her lead on,she was just as pleased to see me as i was her too, took her to the nearby stream for a drink and give her a looking over, checked her locator collar which was giving no reading due to batteries going dead ,there wasnt a mark on her, obviously just digging on to get to her fox, with the fox one step ahead,as if this particular bitch got to grips she was a real charlie slayer,i never got many with her that were still alive tbh

i still keep direct descendants of this bitch now,and god knows where id be,or what id have in my kennels if things had been different

so after 7 days lost to ground all was well,or so i thought,lol,8 months later i saw a panda car pull up outside my house, one plod got out ,walked up my garden path knocked on my door, when i opened the door he introduced himself as the local wildlife liason officer and his visit was regarding a report from the local badger group that a badger sette had been attacked, asked for me,which i told him i was he,asked me to accompany him to station,i disagreed as he hadnt arrested me,but was told if i didnt go voluntarily he would arrest me lol, stuck between a rock and a hard place.

i had no clue as he didnt disclose the location badger sette i was supposed to have interfered with till i was interviewed, and it was the place id lost my bitch in 8months earlier ( at that time it could have been numerous places the powers that be would deem as active settes, which i would do in pursuit of old reynard)

went through the usual motions in interview no comment ect ect, after the interview and tapes turned off the copper told me OFF RECORD lol, that there would be no further action as they would be too many other people for the high jump other than me,ie rspca inspector and police officers for allowing me to try and rescue the dog from an alleged badger sette, and they hadnt followed guide lines regarding this type of "CRIME"

moral of the story i suppose is sometimes when you think all is lost, you still got to try and not give up easily, but also things from the past can bite you in the arse well after youve forgotton all about them (lady luck dealt me a good hand, but this was 10 years or so ago, same incident now may be different)

My mate had a bitch to ground one day short of three weeks, there was an article in EDRD about it, called brute force and ignorance, we got the bitch out, tunnelled on for a hell of a way as it was under a rock face, she must have been able to get at water and prob devoured her opponent, but live she did. We even had to tunnell over an old brick constructed return air shaft tunnell from a long abandoned mine. Hell of an experience, I shit my self more than once on that dig
