undisputed 1,664
Text book boxing from Leonard before he finally sparked out Dave Boy Green in round four You beat me to it mate ... Green was out before he hit the floor great combo from Suger Ray
jasper65 6
You beat me to it mate ... Green was out before he hit the floor great combo from Suger Ray I used to love the boxing back then mate, there's was so many top names about! the heavyweight division was alive as was most of the other divisons. back then if I knew there was a Leonard, Hearns, Duran fight on the cards I wouldn't miss it for nothing, these days I have no idea who's champion of what division! I'm probably getting miserable in my old age but the fight scene doesn't seem half as exciteing as it was in the Leonard era watching this fight again I can't beleive the Docs left Dave Boy Green laying so long on his back after he was sparked clean out, he looked pretty ill after that beating .. gnasher16 30,598
i think your right there jasper if you lived in the 80s you seen the best fighters that ever lived Thats a complete myth !..........apart from the Hagler/Leonard/Duran/Hearns series who else from the ,s could go down as an all time great of their division ?......maybe Benitez or Chavez at a push........for the higher weight divisions above middleweight it was probably the poorest era for the sport ever.......look at the heavyweight division, apart from Holmes at the start of the decade and Tyson towards the end it was filled with the awful era of Witherspoon/Tubbs/Tate/Weaver swapping the titles around for 1 fight at a time....at the lower weights you had Sanchez,Benitez,Chavez.....fair enough they would have been greats in any era........but personally i dont believe the names of the ,s can be compared to the 40,s 50,s or 60,s.............. My theory is the ,s was the last time boxing was shown free on British tv on a regular basis be it on World of Sport,Grandstand or in some cases like Tyson,s peak a dedicated programme with ol Dickie Davies hosting and Reg Gutteridge commentating.......in my opinion thats what made it a special era in the minds today of middle aged men,not the fights or fighters themself....especially when compared to other eras......but like i say thats only my theory Edited August 29, 2011 by gnasher16
marshman 7,758
I don't think it's a case of middle aged men looking through Rose tinted glasses . I think the 80s fighters were better than what u got today. I would fancy Witherspoon/ Tate/tubbs/ against David haye! I would also bet on spinks or andreas, against Hopkins . Mddleweight , haggler against any of today's champ at the same weight . And it goes on IMHO

marshman 7,758
I picked Witherspoon and the others against haye . I would also pick Tyson in his prime in the 80s against any heavyweight in any time! You might have a point about spinks !

Totally agree with you bud, raw power and the most aggressive fighter I've ever seen. Does my head in how people talk about how Lewis destroyed him, that'd be like putting Pele as he is now in the current Brazil team and saying he's shit cos he doesn't make the grade. Im not going to get into the Tyson debate......save to say at the wbc annual convention a few years back a poll had been running in the lead up to it what the boxing writers/journo,s/pundits etc thought the all time top 10 heavyweights were in order......the results were announced with Tyson not making the top 10,which i totally agree with. Witherspoon/Haye your probably right but then the only ,s heavyweight id put in all time top 10 is Holmes and the point was about the ,s producing the best fighters of all time......no way. No its not......Tyson was the younger man in his fight with Lewis.........being " washed up " or " mentally weak " has never been an excuse for greatness in sport with anyone apart from Mike Tyson !.......Why people refuse to look at the facts when judging Tysons boxing career i dont know, thats the trouble when the general public delve into an athletes private life it clouds their judgement of the person as a mere athlete......like i said before the ,s were an impressionable time for British boxing fans and he fitted the bill just perfect.
