Out last night wi young un, almost a trip to vets...

Recommended Posts

Evening folks,

Finished work at 10pm last night and thought i'd take my young dog out for a butchers out in fields behind the house. She hasn't caught a rabbit for herself yet. I've been giving her plenty of chance's but it just hasn't happened yet..... Anyhow had a quick shine and saw a rabbit out in the middle of the field, i walked upto it with the lamp on it, got to about 4feet and it bolted, i slipped the dog and she was after it sharpish. The rabbit ran behind a tree flat out and the dog lost its footing and slipped into the tree with a loud thud.I thought i was in4 a trip to the vets but Thank god she got up and set off after the rabbit again, by which time it was close to the fence into the wood. The dam thing got away..... Just glad she hadn't done any damage.. i keep wondering if she'll ever catch 1. It never seems to just happen... few close calls but no catches.. Would it benefit her if i found someone to go out with a experienced dog.? Or any other suggestions how to improve her chances.?

cheers folks

regarding lamping just keep trying her on the easiest rabbits you can get her on. sat well out.she will catch just be patient.regarding ferreting let her get to some in the nets.once she connects gains some confidence you wont look back.bolting rabbits with no nets and difficult slips on the lamp can all come at a later time. good luck.

Doubling up can be very dangerous: unless the dogs are used to working as a team they can have really bad injuries from running into each other: just keep taking her out on her own: the more she runs, the better she'll get. Keep yourself between the rabbit and where it wants to run to: hedge or whatever. Sneak down the hedges or edges of the fields and look for the rabbit that sits tight, then walk out to it if you have to: not ideal, but she won't see a squatter to begin with.

Also, try practice lamping a thrown dummy in a place where there are no rabbits: throw the dummy, put the beam on it, and send the dog out. That way she starts to learn to look down the beam for whatever is at the end of the light.

Thanks for the advice folks......

I had a walk round the in-laws farm today with the .22 but took the dog along on a lead anyhow. I crept up to a wall at the top of the farm and had a look over, there was about 10 rabbit's grazing close to the wood, anyhow I got 1 with a clean shot. 1 in the bag. Walked a few more fields and saw a lone rabbit on a hill side, me and the dog crept up to within about 50yds and popped that one off too, but this time the rabbit was frigging about a bit, as it was a chest shot,, the dog was wanting in on the action, so I slipped her and she nailed it as it was bouncing around down the hill side, took her a few seconds, but with a little encouragement she fetched it back to me, looking quite proud of her retrieve. Getting her used to the feel and retrieve if nothing else.....

Cheers...
