Hello all i have fished all of my life but only last night did i try trotting i think its an exellent methord just wondered on others views

love trotting for chub grayling etc.often go down to the river dane river bollin (cheshire). had many a good day on these rivers.use a centrepin reel not a expensive one but it does the job.would love a quality centrepin maybe in time.

Love trotting a river with a stick float, ( probably my favourite method) I use a close faced reel I've wanted a decent centre pin for years but never got one ( stingy bast**d lol).

If your new to it remember to keep mending your line so it lies behind the float and not running on infront as this will affect the presentation also hold the float back a little and then let it run on, you'll be suprised how many bites you get straight after holding your float back a bit. feed little and often once you got them competing for it, it can be mental..................... I fancy a day on the river now.

is it better to use a center pin reel or will a normal one do just as good? what bait do you find is best if your fishing for a wide range of fish using this method?

great method for getting a bait flowing through beneath over hanging trees where fish are usualy holed up

only my personal view but i can get much better control using a centrepin once you get the hang of using one.never used a closed faced reel.

Never used a good centre pin but have heard they are great for trotting, I find a closed reel better than a standard fixed spool though. the line comes off the spool very easily which is important, also to allow the line to come off you just press a button on the top so you can do this with the index finger on the hand that holds the rod meaning you have a free hand. 9 times out of 10 you cast under arm with a stick float and I tend to hold the line just above the hook as i realease the cast so you can get into a better rhythm by not letting go of the line after baiting to fick the bale arm off. plus you obviously have the reel in free spool and the engage on a close face is very smooth.

Bait depends on what your after but you wont go far wrong with maggotts feed every cast increase or decrease the amount depending on how steady your catching, hemp and casters can be good too. I also was getting blitzed by bleak once on the Bristol Avon and I had a bag of those jellets on me changed to them, in desperation and caught some cracking chub + roach and hybrids, you never know what will work.
