  1. 1. what would you like to see happen to the dogs for sale section?

    • would you like it to stay as is
    • would you like mods to spend more time policing it and banning all peddlers
    • would you like to see the section removed altogether

Leave it as it is...dont police any threads...if someone is a known peddlar members comments will be on threads and if i was looking for a dog it would raise my awareness.....

Real peddlars have their own websites, will advertise in local rags etc anyway so all your doing is removing an outlet for the genuine hobby breeder with a couple of surplus pups...

:D That old chestnut

A hobby ceases to be a hobby when you have to get money back from it......if a man cant afford his hobbies he shouldnt be doing them, simple.

Right so lets say i breed from a female that i want to have a pup back from and have homes for some of the pups lined up but the bitch throws more pups than i have homes for?

Do you cull or sell the pups, at a reasonable price to offset your costs? I am not saying i breed the bitch every season but in order to get a pup back.....

That is my definition of a hobby breeder...perhaps i should have said breed fancier?? Not some nugget who breeds a bitch every season on the pretext of keeping one back???

This is where im probably a touch obssessive :D ....and i accept not everyones like that......years ago when i bred dogs they were for my kennel and my kennel only....i felt my dogs were better than anyone elses so why would i want other people having as good as i had ?....if i wanted 2 pups from a breeding id raise the entire litter, make judgement at a sensible age then everything but the best 2 would be culled.....fortunately i didnt need money back to cover costs and the fact i trusted nobody apart from my own kennel mates meant culling was the way it had to be.

This " selling off excess pups " is the most well used excuse for selling " top quality pups " and always has been......the reality is a dog you buy is a dog another man didnt want and top quality dogs, real top quality dogs simply dont come along too often so to sell them is either based on a lie or plain stupidity......usually its based on a lie and the dogs are not true top quality........ive always thought dog breeding brings out the true character in a man be it through his peds or his basic understanding of breeding.

I believe if you really are breeding as a hobby you shouldnt need to have homes lined up let alone cull the excess,if its your hobby and your dogs why would you want someone else getting the pleasure.......but like i say when i was breeding dogs i was very strict, probably too strict and i accept not everyones like that........but even so this " selling off the surplus " or " i wanted to keep a few pups back but the other 6 are for sale for 500 each " :D always makes me chuckle.

Agree with some of the above but could never bring myself to cull a healthy litter if that makes me soft I can live with that. In an ideal world it would be great to be able to run a litter on to see which are the good ones. I disagree with your statement about getting the dog that no one else wanted. Pups change so much as they're growing that it's nigh impossible to predict how it will turn out. So the one that nobody fancied has as much chance of making the grade as it's litter mates. In most circumstances you takes your choice and put the work in and hopefully you come out with a well rounded dog at the end of it.

It's ok saying you want to breed because you want one of the pups, but what of the other 10?

Being responsible for the litter it's whole life, ensuring good homes for life, taking pups back no matter what age....great hobby!

Could be that some pups will do different jobs than others so they would suit different needs, not that they are not as good. They are all different. As far as bulldogman's point I understand it completely but there are plenty other places that they can be sold on that have very strict rules about peddling and they do inforce the rules.
