gun smoke 0 Posted March 11, 2007 Report Share Posted March 11, 2007 (edited) been out with my 2 ,8 month old borders this afternoon over my local wood. bit of shooting and the dogs abit of bushing and hunt about my bitch took of after a rabbit after about 15 min no sign of her [she never runs off and comes to my feet when ever i call her] anyway after about 30 min i herd her yelping i thort something must have hold of her a badger or something.when i got to her she was all caught up in barbwire and the barbs all caught up in her front leg what a mess i could not get it off blood all over when pulling it was just ripping her skin open anyway in the end i had to cutt her off with nice bit of flesh. i was not happy she was in real pain. it must be the only bit of barbwire in the hole wood and she ends up in it. just wondering weather to take her to vets now. as the wire was that rusty she is laid up and limping about. anyone have any good tips for sorting cutts? It will burn the skin. something like savlon or sterile eyewash will also be ok. .............barbed wire should be banned. It doesn't do the job it'supposed to, it damages the hides of cattle and other stock and it rips yer coat when its by a footpath. And there's always a old bloody roll of it stuck in the corner of some field. Quote Link to post

vinnie 3 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 do you mean dettel ? no mate i do mean domestos, sounds severe but i can assure you it isn't been using it for years and never had any problems with it. rubbed in with a damp sponge after you've cleaned off the wound it's perfect. thought exactly the same as you mate when i first saw it used by an old huntsman up north, but even administered it when i've had cuts on my own hands and it's not been a problem and does exactly what it says on the bottle"kills all known germs" Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 The only problem with using bleach of any knd is that it kills the healthy tissue too, or rather, cauterises it, meaning that the healing process will take a bit longer. If there's no big flaps of skin dangling about and the dog can lick it to keep the healing process healthy, then boiled cooled salt water will clean it well. Then leave it open unless the dog is being obsessed with it and licking it too much. Use Intrasite Gel or Savln to keep it moist, and time will do the rest. If there's flaps of skin flapping about, then I'd go to the vet. Its difficult to help a lot more without seeing a pic of the wound. Quote Link to post

gun smoke 0 Posted March 12, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 hi thanks for all the good add vice. i used salt water on her and savolon then dressed it up. its about an 1,1/2 inch cutt on the inside of her right leg it looks alot better than yesterday she has been licking it alot. it would not of been as bad if i hadnt of had 2 cut her off i didnt think barbwire could do as much damage as that ie the way it was caught in her skin it should be banned. thanks lads. bill88 6 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 I have a sterile squeezy bottle,i fill it with warm salt wter and squirt it on the cut's,this get's the shite out without rubbing.I have been using Savlon dry antiseptic spray on all my dog's and kid's lol.It's brilliant stuff,it's iodine based and leave's a dry powdery covering,as previously said,if it's real bad,then it's vet's and antibiotic's,but the Savlon is very good,a mate has used it on his hawk's,and he swear's by it too. waz77 15 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 I find Hibiscrub is the best stuff you can get for cleaning wounds,its what surgeons use before and after surgery,you can buy it from equestrian and farm supplies,about £5 for a 500ml bottle,i use it when terriers need cleaning up after foxing and find they rarely need jabbing with antibiotics with this stuff Quote Link to post
